Christopher "Chris" Durkin (born February 8, 2000 in Glen Allen , Virginia ) is an American football player of Irish descent in the position of midfielder . Since the end of August 2019 he has been playing for the Belgian first division club VV St. Truiden .

Club career

Chris Durkin was born on February 8, 2000 as the son of former college soccer player Kevin Durkin ( SUNY Oneonta ) in the small town of Glen Allen, Virginia, and grew up here. He started playing football at a young age and was already playing at the age of eight in the youth division of the Richmond Kickers , which are located just a few kilometers south of his hometown in the capital of Virginia . After all major league soccer franchises were looking for partners in the third-tier United Soccer League in 2013 , the Richmond Kickers became a partner of the MLS franchise DC United . Because of this partnership, Durkin played alternately in the youth division of both clubs. From 2013 to 2014 he belonged to the youth of DC United for the first time, then was again from 2014 to 2015 with the Richmond Kickers and then again between 2015 and 2016 in the youth department of the franchise from Washington, DC In parallel to his youth career, he completed the Glen Allen high school in his hometown.

Shortly after his 15th birthday, Durkin, at that time a U-16 player at the academy, received his first contract with the professional team of the Richmond Kickers, which he signed on March 27, 2015. Less than a month later, he played his first professional game when he was used as a center forward on April 22, 2015 in a 1-0 away win over New York Red Bulls II by coach Leigh Cowlishaw , in the 69th a yellow card was cautioned and the full game was played. After that, he was not in any other league game in the team's official squad, but on June 17, 2015, he was unused on the bench in the 3-1 four-round defeat by the Columbus Crew and the associated elimination from the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2015 Richmond Kickers. He also played a friendly match between the Kickers and Premier League club West Bromwich Albion in July .

After spending the rest of his time with the Kickers' offspring, Chris Durkin received his first professional contract with the MLS franchise DC United on June 14, 2016. Previously, his family had tried due to his deer Ethnicity, to a EU - passport to come to a possible move to Europe easier. This made him the eighth homegrown player in the history of the franchise and, at 16 years and 127 days, the fifth youngest homegrown player in the history of Major League Soccer. He is also the third youngest player to sign a professional contract with DC United after Freddy Adu and Santino Quaranta . The very next day Durkin made his competitive debut for the capital city franchise when he was used again in a four-round game of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup . In the game against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers he was used by coach Ben Olsen from the start, received a yellow card in the 63rd minute and was replaced by Luciano Acosta in the 86th minute . The game subsequently lost the franchise 3: 4 on penalties, after which DC United was eliminated from the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2016 .

In order to gain more match practice, Durkin was subsequently loaned out to partner Richmond Kickers in mid-July 2016 and made his first appearance over the full length of the USL season on July 23, 2016 in a 3-0 home win over Toronto FC II 2016 . After a brief assignment in the following game, he sat unused on the bench in his third game, completed the full length of the game in the fourth game and had to sit on the bench again without being used in the fifth game in a row. After that he was no longer available for the team in any game and returned to the US U-17 residency program in Bradenton , Florida , where he had been preparing for the U-17 World Cup the following year since January 2016 . The Richmond Kickers reached a seventh place in the final ranking of the USL 2016 in the Eastern Conference and were eliminated in the conference play-offs in the first round after extra time against Louisville City FC .

After this loan expired in November 2017, he played again for DC United. At the end of August 2019, he signed his first contract in Europe as part of a loan from the Belgian first division VV St. Truiden . After he was actually on the pitch for St. Truiden from the end of November 2019, the final move to Belgium was agreed at the beginning of May 2020.

National team career

Durkin gained his first experience in a US youth national team in 2013, when he was appointed to the U-14 national team in his home country for the first time by U-14 national coach Tony Lepore . After his first assignments in 2013 and 2014, he received a call- up from John Hackworth in December 2014 for the US U-15 selection . Subsequently, he took part with the team in camps and tournaments in Italy , Argentina , England and Florida. At the end of November 2015, John Hackworth was finally called up for the first time in the US U-17 squad . After some time in the U-17 national team, he was invited to the US U-17 residency program at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida in January 2016 , where Durkin then spent most of the year. In between he was briefly at DC United and the Richmond Kickers in the summer, but returned full-time to the academy in the Sunshine State in the fall to prepare for the World Cup the following year . In 2016, Durkin advanced to become one of the most outstanding players of the U-17 national team today and led them as team captain for much of the year . With the team he took part in various tournaments at home and abroad, including the AIFF Youth Cup 2016 , in which he reached the finals with the United States and lost 1: 2 to his peers from South Korea .

With the US U20 national team , he took part in the U20 World Cup in 2019 , where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Already his father Kevin Durkin was active as a football player, but did not bring it beyond missions in college football ; his younger brother Andrew (* 2003) is also a soccer player, currently (as of 2016) in the junior division of the Richmond Kickers .
