Christopher Ian "Chris" Timms (born March 24, 1947 in Christchurch , † March 19, 2004 in the Firth of Thames ) was a New Zealand sailor .

successes

Chris Timms was originally a mountain climber, but was seriously injured in a 1966 crash that killed one of his friends. He then turned to sailing and took part in two Olympic Games together with Rex Sellers in the Tornado boat class . 1984 in Los Angeles , he and Sellers finished the regatta with 14 points in first place after they had finished six of the seven races in the top three. They became Olympic champions ahead of the US and Australian boats . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , the two won the silver medal behind the French and in front of the Brazilian boat with two wins and 35 total points.

As a chemist, Timms mainly dealt with resins . He was a co-founder of Adhesive Technologies , which worked on the use of synthetic resins in the maritime field. Many products were used in the America's Cup , for example . On March 19, 2004 he crashed while preparing for an air show with a Fouga Magister in the Firth of Thames , neither he nor another crew member survived the crash.
