Christian Becker-Carus

Christian Becker-Carus (born February 5, 1936 in Hamburg ) is a German natural scientist , psychologist and sleep researcher . He is Prof. em. for psychology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University , where he was director of the Institute for General and Applied Psychology since 1985.

Life

1951–1956 Becker-Carus received an artistic training in the study studio of his father Ewald Becker-Carus ( Hamburg ), in the disciplines: watercolor , oil painting , studies in front of nature, drawing , drypoint etching and metal driving.

Becker-Carus studied at the University of Hamburg initially zoology , botany , chemistry (with philosophy , pedagogy ). In 1959 he passed the examination at the Philosophicum with Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker . In 1962 he passed the state examination for higher teaching post. 1964 Becker-Carus doctorate at Curt Kosswig to Dr. rer. nat. At the same time, he completed a second degree in psychology . In 1967 he passed the diploma examination in the subject . In 1972 he completed his habilitation in psychology at the University of Düsseldorf with Gustav A. Lienert .

1966–1968 Becker-Carus worked as a lecturer and research assistant at the Psychological Institute of the University of Hamburg . 1968–1974 he was head of the experimental electrophysiology group at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry ( Munich ). 1972–1973 he taught physiological psychology at the University of Regensburg , and 1972–1974 at the University of Düsseldorf , where he initiated the medical psychology course for physicians with Gustav A. Lienert .

In 1974 he was appointed Professor of Physiological Psychology and Head of the Department of Physiological Psychology at the University of Tübingen . In the same year the first psychophysiological sleep laboratory in Germany was set up . He was also in charge of the animal laboratory with studies on learning psychology . 1974–1980 he was entrusted with the management and implementation of the European Community's “Innovation Project Non-Sedentary Aid” at the University of Tübingen . In 1975 Becker-Carus was elected director of the Psychological Institute. 1978 appointment as full professor and director at the Psychological Institute of the University of Münster and head of the working group for general and applied psychology. It was there that the psychophysiological sleep laboratory was set up and managed, and soon after, patient care was also possible. 1978–2002, Becker-Carus, in cooperation with the Rheine Zoo , Delphinarium ( Münster ) and Allwetterzoo Münster , set up and managed the experimental animal psychological station in the Department of Psychology through cognitive learning. In 1979 he acquired the qualification in hypnosis and in 1997 the qualification in somnology ( sleep research ).

1980–1981 Becker-Carus was Dean of the Department of Psychology at the University of Münster . From 1985 to 2001 he was director and head of the newly founded Psychological Institute II for General and Applied Psychology at the University of Münster , as well as head of the sleep medicine center (psychological department) which was developed from the sleep laboratory and accredited by the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM) of the University of Münster. 1989 Foundation of the Society for the Promotion of Diagnostics and Therapy for Sleep Disorders (GFS). In 2001 the sleep center was transferred to the Medical Faculty of the University Hospital Münster , Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurology as the new Sleep Medicine Section .

Scientific achievements

Becker-Carus' interdisciplinary research focused on biological and neuroscientific issues in the following areas: Perception and action: visu-motor plasticity and sensory dominance , learning and memory development in animals and humans, effects of the daily period , early experience and perception development, ethological motivational research , stress and psychophysiology of the Sleep, as well as pharmacological and new cognitive therapeutic approaches for chronic sleep disorders .

Becker-Carus was the founder of the sleep laboratory at the University of Tübingen (1974) with the first systematic sleep studies. He was the founder of the sleep laboratory at the University of Münster (1978). Becker-Carus was a co-founder of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine. Becker-Carus was a scientific advisor to the magazine natur + kosmos and the magazine Somnologie . Becker-Carus is a member of various leading scientific societies. He is the editor of the book series "Forum Stress and Sleep Research", co-editor of "Kompendium Schlafmedizin", a permanent member of the Dorsch Psychological Dictionary , and the author of various books.

Awards

He helped found the Free Waldorf School in Münster, which opened in 1983. He was also a co-planner and designer of the new school building there, which was inaugurated in 1993.
