Career

Christian Eduard Böttcher first attended the Stuttgart Art School under Johann Heinrich von Dannecker from 1833 to 1838 and trained as a lithographer . He then worked as such for the Ebner'sche publishing house in Stuttgart and for the lithographic institute Arnz & Comp. in Düsseldorf . From 1844 to 1849 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with the history painter Theodor Hildebrandt and in the master class of Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow . After completing his studies, he settled in Düsseldorf and was appointed professor at the art academy in 1872. In 1848 he was one of the founding members of the Malkasten artists' association , of which he was part of the board. He was a member of the Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help as well as the academic association "Orient".

Artistic activity

In his work, Boettcher mainly devoted himself to portraits and figurines, although initially - under the influence of Carl Wilhelm Huebner - he preferred socially critical themes, such as the paintings The Blind and His Guide (1845) and The Release of the Prisoner (1848). In the 1860s / 70s, paintings were created that bring together the representation of people, cities and landscapes on the Rhine, localizable between Bingen and Cologne, and whose subjects are occasionally in the tradition of Adolph Schroedter . In contrast to the latter, which is often satirical and critical, Boettcher's popular compositions emphasize a late romantic sentimental mood, for example in Haymaking on the Rhine (1856) and Evening on the Rhine (1860) and Summer Night on the Rhine (1862), both of which are (identifiable) Düsseldorf artists show in front of a tavern, Rhenish harvest near Sinzig (1864), "The Tourist on the Rhine" - probably the painter Adolf Seel - (1865), Landhaus am Rhein (1866), extract from the grape harvest (1867), Am Marktbrunnen of a Rhenish town ( 1870), or Rhine trip on the Loreley (1880). Boettcher also appeared as a portrait painter and draftsman, including portrait drawings by the painters Carl Gottfried Eybe and Hermann Werner . Lithographs based on his work appeared in the Düsseldorf artist albums as well as in the “Collection of lithographs based on genre pictures from Düsseldorf artists”, wood engravings in many illustrated sheets of the time. The artists' association “Malkasten” in Düsseldorf has his own portrait, painted by Ernst Bosch , another by Adolf Lins and a caricature.
