life and work

Leinberger continued the tradition of his family from Weiden in the Upper Palatinate . His father Georg (born January 28, 1679) was a master potter , his uncle Johann Georg a plasterer , while his younger brother Georg Karl (1714–1798) became a court painter in Ansbach . Christian Leinberger became the best-known representative of this family and, thanks to his international activities, can also be counted among the outstanding artists of the 18th century.

Ceiling painting of the rotunda in Frankfurt's Römer, around 1903

His most important youth work is the ceiling fresco from 1726/27 in the Evangelical Church of St. Peter and Paul in Erlangen-Bruck . A three-year trip to Italy ( Venice , Rome , Naples ) was part of his further training. After a short period in Vienna , Christian Leinberger was called to Frankfurt am Main in 1732 . In the town hall there , supported by his brother Georg Karl, he decorated the rotunda and the flat ceiling in the elector's room of the house of the Golden Swan with huge frescoes . The Supra Port Painting the election office are still in the Historical Museum of Frankfurt to visit, while all the frescoes in the Second World War were destroyed. However, they were documented as part of the “Führer mandate for color photography” and so at least passed on in pictures.

The Leinberger-Haus in Erlangen, provided with the different spelling of the name as "Leimberger", which is also occasionally encountered elsewhere.

After working in Frankfurt am Main, both brothers returned to their hometown Erlangen after a detour via Westphalia and Bayreuth . The greatest work of Leinberger was the painting of the Neustadt University Church . The pictorial program leads through several important scenes in Christian salvation history . From 1742 to 1744 Leinberger stayed in Copenhagen to make a number of great works, including altarpieces for the palace chapel . He then returned to Erlangen, where, among other things, he decorated the town house on Friedrichstrasse, which is still known today as the Leinbergerhaus, with an allegorical ceiling painting.
