Theodor Bernd (born April 12, 1775 in Meseritz , Neumark ; † August 26, 1854 in Bonn ) was a German linguist , sphragistician and heraldist .

Life

Bernd had been studying theology in Jena since 1794 , but had to seek advancement as a private tutor since 1796 . Joachim Heinrich Campe drew him to Braunschweig in 1804 to work on the "Dictionary of the German Language". But the work soon fell to Bernd alone, who completed it from 1807 to 1811.

In 1811 he got a position at the library in Breslau , in May 1813 a professorship at the high school in Kalisch and in October 1815 at the Royal High School in Poznan . In the autumn of 1818 he was appointed librarian secretary to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where in December 1822 he also became an associate professor for diplomacy , sphragistics and heraldry.
