Christian Schmeiser (2009)

Christian Schmeiser (born April 16, 1958 in Vienna ) is an Austrian mathematician . He is Professor of Mathematics with special focus on non-linear partial differential equations at the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna and Head of Division for Partial Differential Equations at the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Linz . He is also one of the founding members of the Wolfgang Pauli Institute , of which he is a board member.

Schmeiser studied technical mathematics at the Technical University (TU) Vienna and the University of Tokyo . In 1984 he did his doctorate at the Vienna University of Technology under Richard Weiss on the subject of Singular Singularly Perturbed Boundary Value Problems - singularly perturbed boundary value problems . In 1989 he completed his habilitation at the same university and then spent a year at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy , New York, as part of an Erwin Schrödinger scholarship from the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF) . From 1990 to 2005 he was a professor at the Institute for Applied and Numerical Mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology. During this time he also held various visiting professorships in France , for example at the École normal supérieure de Cachan , the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis , the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse and the Lille I University . In 2001 the Wolfgang Pauli Institute was founded. Schmeiser has been working at RICAM since 2003 and at the University of Vienna since 2005.

His areas of specialization are partial differential equations and their applications in biomathematics (with a focus on cell migration , dynamics of the cytoskeleton and chemotaxis ) and mathematical physics ( quantum mechanics and charged particles , kinetic transport equations ) and stochastic differential equations .
