Christian Seybold, self-portrait

Christian Seybold (baptized March 19, 1695 in Neuenhain ; † September 28, 1768 in Vienna ) was an artist from the Baroque era . He created portraits that were atypical of the sitter and not idealized for his time.

Life

For a long time little was known about his childhood and education. Christian Seybold was one of 11 children. His father was Johann Peter Seybold (1658-1716), originally from Oberursel . He probably lived in Soden ( Kurmainz ) until 1715 , when he moved to Vienna at the age of 20. In the same year he married Maria Elisabeth Wimmer (1692–1717), who had a child a month later. In 1718 he married the second time, when mother and child had died.

Seybold's first work is said to be a portrait of the imperial councilor Johann Adam Questenberg (* 1678; † 1752 or 1753) from around 1728, which was published in 1728 as a copperplate by Andreas and Joseph Schmuzer. Around 1742 he was from August III. appointed court painter; In 1749 he became Maria Theresa's court painter .

Works

Christian Seybold, Old Woman , Old Masters Picture Gallery

In his naturalistic portraits , Seybold was influenced by Balthasar Denner and Johann Kupezky . Some are now exhibited in the collection of the Baroque Museum in Vienna's Belvedere Palace, as well as some portraits (self-portrait, old woman, old man, girl, boy) in the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden, the Baroque gallery of the Ludwigsburg Palace , in the Mainz State Museum , in Schönbusch Palace in Aschaffenburg and in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg . His works can also be found in the Louvre in Paris, in the Uffizi in Florence and in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. There are also self-portraits in the Szépművészeti Múzeum and Liechtenstein Museum . Many of his pictures disappeared as looted art , which is why it is difficult to get an overview of Seybold's oeuvre.
