She studied sociology , philosophy , political science and economics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and graduated with a degree in sociology. Bender received his doctorate from the University of Bremen in 1987 with a thesis on George Herbert Mead and Niklas Luhmann ( Identity and Self-Reflection , 1989). The habilitation took place in 1992 at the University of Augsburg . In her habilitation thesis she examines constructivist and sociological models of self-organization in science research ( self-organization in systems theory and constructivism , 1993).

In 1992 Christiane Bender represented the chair for sociology and social planning at the University of Stuttgart . After taking on the position of professor for sociology at the Institute for Sociology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , she accepted the appointment there in 1993. Since 2001 she has been Professor of Sociology at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.

Bender deals with the socio-moral and philosophical foundations of modern societies. She is particularly interested in the change in social structure and values, especially the development from industry to service society . She examines different social and welfare states (Germany, USA, Sweden, Switzerland) from a comparative perspective. She also analyzes gender-specific models of division of labor, changes in institutions and the behavior of elites. She often publishes together with the sociologist Hans Graßl, who teaches at the University of Siegen .

In addition to scientific publications, she also publishes articles for the general public and interferes in debates with columnist media articles. For example, in 2018 with Hans Graßl in the NZZ , she pointed to the topicality of Calvinist ethics and the thinking of Johannes Althusius for federalism , which the authors consider to be worth considering . In 2014, together with Graßl, Bender proposed that citizens entitled to vote be given the opportunity to enter the Bundestag by lottery . According to the proposal, five percent of the Bundestag seats could be filled in this way. In her Mémoir Podium and Pampers , published in 2010, Bender reported on her personal experiences with combining work and family .
