Christina Thürmer-Rohr

Christina Thürmer-Rohr (born Christina Rohr, born November 17, 1936 in Arnswalde ) is a German social scientist, feminist theorist and musician. She is one of the pioneers in women's and gender studies at German-speaking universities. Until her retirement in 2005, she taught and researched as a professor of educational sciences at the Technical University of Berlin , where she founded the first major in women's studies in 1976 . She taught feminist theory , human rights and the culture of remembrance.

She became known in particular through the term “ complicity ”, with which she describes the participation or complicity of women in the institutionalized rule of the patriarchate .

life and work

Thürmer-Rohr was born in Arnswalde in 1936 as the daughter of the evangelical pastor . Her father was a staunch National Socialist who had volunteered for service in the Wehrmacht and died in Russia in 1941 . She has a sister. Her mother and her daughters first moved to Oetinghausen in 1943 and then to Bielefeld ( Evangelical Hospital Bethel, Bielefeld ) in 1945 , where Thürmer-Rohr graduated from high school. From 1956 she first studied German and Romance languages and from 1957 psychology and philosophy (diploma). From 1961 to 1964 she did her doctorate as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation on the subject of “contact concept and contact diagnosis” and worked in the psychological counseling center of the city of Ludwigshafen . From 1964 to 1969 she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Psychology at the Technical University of Berlin and from 1966 took over the management of the affiliated psychological counseling center.

In 1969 she became an assistant professor at the Psychological Institute of the Technical University of Berlin and participated as a lecturer in the department of architecture and urban planning in numerous urban planning and renovation projects. In 1972 she became a professor at the Berlin University of Education at the Institute for Social Education. She married, was now called Christina Thürmer-Rohr and had a son. In 1976 she founded the specialization in women's studies at the PH Berlin and was also co-founder and board member of the association "Social Science Research and Practice for Women eV" in Cologne. From 1979 to 1983 she was a member of the rock band "Outside" (experimental rock). From 1979 she was involved in non-university feminist and political education work as well as in the Association for the Promotion of the Protection of Abused Women

In 1980 she became a professor at the Technical University of Berlin in the Faculty of Education. Her main study and research areas were feminist theory, human rights and the culture of remembrance. Musically, joint projects and performances with the pianist and later partner Laura Gallati (classical and experimental music for two pianos) followed from 1983 , with whom she founded the Akazie 3 association from 2003 as a “forum for political and musical thinking”.

She was visiting professor at the University of Friborg in 1986 (subject of political theory by Hannah Arendt), and in 2001 at the University of Salzburg (subject of gender research ). From 2010 to 2016 she was a member of the jury for the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought .
