Christine Goerke

Christine Goerke (* 1969 ) is an American opera singer ( dramatic soprano ).

Life

Christine Goerke was born in 1969 in New York , USA , as the daughter of Richard and Marguerite Goerke . She grew up in Medford , New York, where she attended Tremont Elementary School, Oregon Avenue Middle School, and Patchogue-Medford High School. After finishing school, she attended the State University of New York at Fredonia for one semester in the fall of 1986, specializing in clarinet. During her time there, she decided to pursue a career as a singer. In 1989 she began her vocal studies at Stony Brook University and graduated in 1994 with a degree in singing. From 1994 to 1997 she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera ’s Young Artist Program.

Career

Goerke began her career with minor roles at the Metropolitan Opera as part of the Opera House's Young Artist Program. Among other things, she sang the First Lady in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and the High Priestess in Verdi's Aida . In 1997/98 she sang Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera .

In 1997 Goerke also had her first major role outside of the Metropolitan Opera when she sang the title role of the opera Iphigénie en Tauride at the Glimmerglass Opera. She also sang this role in the same year at the New York City Opera and in a concert with the Boston Baroque Orchestra in Boston in 2000.

After her voice changed, Goerke began to sing roles that required a stronger voice. At the Metropolitan Opera she sang Die Färberin in Die Frau ohne Schatten in 2013 , the title role in Puccini's Turandot in 2015 , and Brünnhilde in the Ring des Nibelungen in the 2018/19 season.

Christine Goerke has been married to James Holloway since 2005. They have two daughters and live in Teaneck , New Jersey .

Awards and honors

Goerke has won various awards and won several music competitions. She won the Robert Jacobson Study Grant in 1994, an ARIA Award and a George London Award in 1996 , and a Richard Tucker Career Grant Award in 1997. In 2001 Goerke received the prestigious Richard Tucker Award. She was also recognized by the Lotte Lehmann Foundation and received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Stony Brook University in 2010. In 2014 she received the Helpmann Award for Best Female Performer in an Opera for her performance in Elektra with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
