Christ the King Church

The Christkönigskirche is a Catholic church in Greater Saxony , a district of Hirschberg on Bergstrasse in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built between 1963 and 1965.

history

In the Middle Ages, Großsachsen was a branch of the parish in the northern neighboring town of Hohensachsen . The Worms Synod of 1494 mentioned a separate chapel in Greater Saxony, which was consecrated to Maria Magdalena . When the southern neighboring village of Leutershausen was given an independent parish, it was also responsible for the part of Greater Saxony that lay south of the Apfelbach, while the northern part remained with Hohensachsen. In 1556, Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate .

In the following period the Catholics remained in the minority. In 1802 there were 182 Catholics in Greater Saxony, in 1933 there were 307. After the Second World War, the number rose to 709 in 1950 due to the admission of displaced persons. When a new building area was planned in the 1960s, the order was therefore given to the Archbishop's Building Authority in Heidelberg to build a church in Greater Saxony. It was designed and planned by Manfred Schmitt-Fiebig . After breaking ground in 1963, the Christ the King Church was after almost two years of construction in 1965 benediziert be. It was consecrated on October 2nd, 1966. In 2011 the church was renovated. The Catholics in Hirschberg today belong with the Weinheim parishes to the pastoral care unit Weinheim-Hirschberg in the deanery Heidelberg-Weinheim in the Archdiocese of Freiburg .
