Christoph Helm

Christoph Thomas Helm ( January 27, 1949 in Celle ) is a German science administrator. From 1990 to 2004, as head of department and state secretary for science and research in the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg, he played a key role in the development of universities and non-university research in the new federal states .

Career

After graduating from high school in Celle in 1967 and a three-year training as a reserve officer , Christoph Helm studied classical philology and archeology , history and political science at the University of Göttingen from 1970 and received his doctorate in 1979 with a thesis on Cicero's consular speeches with Carl Joachim Classen and Alfred Heuss . After a brief spell as a teacher of classical languages and history in Wolfenbüttel he moved in 1986 into the science administration of the State of Lower Saxony and in 1990 Head of Department for Science and Research in the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt. After serving as acting State Secretary from 1993 to 1994, he was appointed State Secretary for Science and Research of the State of Brandenburg in 2000. From 1990 to 2005 he was in charge of the development of the universities of applied sciences, especially the universities of Anhalt , Harz , Stendal , Magdeburg and Wildau , the restructuring of the universities and the establishment of non-university research institutes.

After teaching for several years at Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg, the Wildau University of Applied Sciences and the European University Viadrina, he was appointed honorary professor for the history of science at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt / Oder in 2007 .

Cultural and science policy activities

Development of top-level neuroscientific research at the Magdeburg site at Otto von Guericke University and the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology . Participation in setting up the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg and ethnological research in Halle and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research ( UFZ ) in Halle, Leipzig and Magdeburg. Redesign and renovation of the two medical faculties in Halle and Magdeburg through innovative ideas such as leasing in university construction. Strengthening the technology transfer at the Weinberg site in Halle through the use of ERDF funds . Promotion of the Winckelmann Society and securing of the long-term project edition of Winckelmann's works . Expansion of the gene bank of the Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research ( IPK ) in Gatersleben . Promotion of the cultural tradition of the former royal seat of Wolfenbüttel .
