Christoph Uthmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christoph Uthmann (born September 15, 1507 in Löwenberg in Silesia , † September 11, 1553 in Annaberg ) was a German entrepreneur in the Ore Mountains .

Life

After moving from the Silesian Löwenberg to what was then the center of the Saxon silver mining Annaberg, Uthmann married the fifteen-year-old Barbara von Elterlein there in 1529 , a daughter of the Annaberg tithe Heinrich von Elterlein (1485-1539). He was a cloth merchant and, in addition to ore and copper mines in the Annaberg area, acquired a very lucrative ducal privilege that gave him the monopoly on buying copper in the surrounding mines. In 1531 Uthmann and his wife moved into a house in Annaberg (today Museumsgasse 1) that Heinrich von Elterlein had bought. Four years later, the family moved into a prestigious house on Markt 20 (now Markt 8), which they bought for 1,000 guilders. Together they had at least twelve children.

Uthmann was a successful mountain and hut owner. He was involved as a building trade in the most profitable mine in the Annaberger Revier, Himmlisch Heer , he owned the St. Briccius copper mine behind the Pöhlberg , a stamping mill on the Pöhlbach and several smelters. The large income flowing from the mine enabled him to turn to new businesses. In 1550 he bought a smelting works for the extraction of black copper from the mountain master Hans Linhart , who was the husband of a cousin of his wife Barbara, from the neighboring Saxon and Bohemian mines, especially those in Annaberg, Schneeberg , Elterlein , Freiberg in Saxony and that in St. Katharinenberg in Bohemia. In order to be able to operate the Saigerhütte Grünthal profitably, he had obtained a privilege, according to which the ores of all copper mines had to be assigned to him at a price set by the sovereign. When Uthmann suddenly died on September 11, 1553, his widow Barbara was faced with the task of continuing her husband's business, which she successfully achieved.

Note on the family name

In Christian Lehmann's Historisches Schauplatz from 1699 it is noted in the correction sheet that the widow Barbara Uthmann's name has to be changed to Ulmann. So the name of Christoph Uthmann would have to be changed to Christoph Ulmann. Then the origin of his father Andreas (Endress) Uthmann (Ullmann?) From Löwenberg would have to be checked as well. In Löwenberg in Silesia, the family name Uthmann has been mentioned in genealogical publications since the 14th century. The name Ullmann, on the other hand, appeared in the area around Hirschberg in Silesia from the 16th century, as evidenced by other genealogical research approaches to the Ullmann family (Ulma-Günzburg), who emigrated from Ulm or Augsburg to Hirschberg in Silesia. On the other hand, in the Hirschberg region there is no naming of a Uthmann family. It has not been researched whether the name was actually changed from Christoph Ulmann to Christoph Uthmann in Silesia or Annaberg.

Separated from this, Christoph and Barbara Uthmann were ancestors of the Silesian noble family von Uthmann and Schmolz .
