Christophe Gabriel Jean Marie Jacquin de Margerie (born August 6, 1951 in Mareuil-sur-Lay-Dissais , Vendée , †  October 20, 2014 in Moscow ) was a French manager . He was CEO of Total SA from February 2007 until his death .

Life

Christophe de Margerie was born into a family of the Taittinger champagne dynasty .

He attended the ESCP Europe business school in Paris. He then began his career in 1974 in the finance department of Total . In the following years he worked for the group in Asia , the Middle East (1995 to 1999), Africa and North America .

In 1990 he became Chief Financial Officer ( CFO ) in the Middle East , where he rose to Deputy Executive Vice President . In June 1995 he became Total Vice President for the Middle East. In 1999 he was named President for Exploration and Production. On January 1, 2000, he became Senior Executive Vice President of the Production and Exploration Division. In February 2007 he succeeded the previous CEO of Total Thierry Desmarest .

In March 2007, de Margerie was investigated for bribery. The bribe is said to have given Total access to Iranian natural gas. A case against him and other suspects for circumventing the oil-for-food program for Iraq was dropped in 2013 after years of investigation.

Christophe de Margerie expressed in 2009 about global peak oil ( peak oil ) , the world can never be more than 100 million barrels of oil per day benefit because the geological, financial and political conditions did not allow it.

On October 20, 2014, de Margerie died in a flight accident at Moscow-Vnukowo Airport : the Dassault Falcon 50 business jet, with which he was the only passenger to travel to Paris, collided with a snow plow when it took off around midnight (local time) in fog on the runway. The three crew members (Yann Pican, Maxime Rassiat and Ruslana Vervelle) also died. De Margerie left behind a wife and three grown children. On November 1, 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded him the Order of Honor .

The successor in the management of Total SA took place in a tandem : his predecessor Thierry Desmarest was appointed President, Patrick Pouyanné as General Manager.
