The Río Chubut ( Welsh Afon Camwy ) is an approximately 800 km long river in the southern Argentine landscape of Patagonia .

Its name comes from the word chupat , which in the Tehuelche language means something like "transparent" or "clear".

The river flows through the province of Chubut before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at Rawson after about 800 km . The main source river of the Chubut has its source in Carreras in the Andes of the Río Negro province , but its catchment area covers a large part of the western Andean foothills between Bariloche and Esquel . The main tributary of the upper reaches is the Río Chico , which comes from the area of San Carlos de Bariloche. The various tributaries unite before the small town of Piedra Parada , where the river enters the flat plain that is typical of the Argentine Patagonia . The Chubut flows east to the town of Paso del Sapo , where it turns to the southeast and from now on flows through the very sparsely populated center of the Chubut province. Behind Paso de Indios the river meets trunk road 25 (Esquel - Trelew ) and now runs again in an easterly direction.

The Río Chubut was dammed about 120 km before Trelew . The dam construction was planned and directed by Antonio Domingo Pronsato and completed on April 19, 1963 ( 43 ° 41 ′ 59 ″  S , 66 ° 29 ′ 0 ″  W ). The reservoir and dam were named after the scientist Florentino Ameghino . The 255 m long dam is made of concrete and the lake now covers 70 km². The power plant uses a 56 m high artificial waterfall with a flow rate of 150 m³ / s and three turbines. It supplies the towns of Pico Truncado , Caleta Olivia , Comodoro Rivadavia and the entire lower valley of the Río Chubut with energy.

The Río Chico flows into the reservoir ( Embalse Florentino Ameghino ), which is the most important tributary of the Chubut in the lower reaches. It is not to be confused with the Río Chico, which flows into the Chubut in its headwaters.

The Río Chubut is mostly flat and its water flow varies between 4 m³ / s in the dry season and 30 m³ / s in high water. These differences and the regular flooding make the stretches of land on its banks fertile growing areas, especially for fruit . The river is a popular destination for trout anglers , but a license is required.

In the 19th century, Welsh emigrants arrived in Chubut and established Welsh settlements called Colonias Galesas in the valley of the Río Chubut . Today, the Welsh language and Welsh teahouses are typical of several towns in the region, many of which also have Welsh names, such as: B. Dolavon and Trelew .
