The story takes place in a medieval world where Claymore are on the hunt for man-eating Yoma . She follows the fate of Clare, who has to fight her way through this world as Claymore. The work can be classified into the genres of Shōnen , Drama , Dark Fantasy and Horror .

action

Within a medieval world there exist Yoma ( 妖魔 , Yōma , dt. "Demon"), who disguised as humans also live among humans and feed on their entrails . An unspecified organization, however, trains women called claymore , who have been given the meat of a Yoma and are therefore half human and half Yoma. This treatment changed her hair color to light blonde and her eyes appear silver. They have a much higher physical strength than normal people, can track down Yoma disguised as human beings and master other individual skills. All claymore are capable of rapid recovery from serious injuries. As a defensive called Claymore lost limbs can restore the offensive Claymore mentioned are able to master special fighting techniques.

Even though they are a mix of human and yoma, their human ego remains in control. In difficult situations they can release more energy if they use the yoki ( 妖 気 , yōki , dt. "Uncanny mood"), the yoma slumbering in them. In doing so, they slowly mutate into a Yoma themselves, making it more and more difficult for them to maintain control over their bodies. If, however, they exceed a critical limit, they are no longer able to transform themselves back and have to allow themselves to be killed by their comrades-in- arms before they become an awakened creature ( 覚 d 者 , dt. "Awakened"). These creatures are much stronger than normal Yoma and often have sadistic instincts.

Many of these creatures were created in the organization's first experiments when they were still trying to cope with the situation with male claymore. However, it turned out that men too often exceeded their limits in a raging frenzy. For this reason, only female claymore are trained.

The Claymore stand between the humans and the Yoma, but are despised and feared on both sides. The organization provides claymore for all 47 regions of the country, but they are numbered according to their estimated strength. Villages and towns that are hit by Yoma have the opportunity to call the organization for help, which then sends a claymore. If the community is successfully cleared of Yoma through a claymore, the organization demands payment. Should this not take place, this place would be left to itself in the event of future attacks by Yoma.

Teresa

Teresa ( テ レ サ ), also known as "Teresa with the faint smile" ( 微笑 の テ レ サ , Bishō no Teresa , Eng . "Smiling Teresa"), moves as a claymore through the country and is considered the most powerful warrior in the organization. She is ruthless and cold-hearted towards people. In a town she meets a young girl and kills a Yoma standing behind her. The abused and silent girl has since fixed on Teresa, so that she follows her every step of the way. Although Teresa does not treat her too warmly at first, she gets used to the girl and eventually gives her the name Clare ( ク レ ア ). However, one day Teresa decides to leave Clare in a town that she had just freed from a Yoma. When she leaves the city, it is attacked by robbers whom she had met before. She finds the badly mistreated Clare among the burning ruins. Threatened and furious, she kills the robbers, breaking the organization's laws that prohibit Claymore from killing people. Imposed by the firing squad, she evades and wounds the Claymore present.

After this incident, the four strongest Claymore Irene ( イ レ ー ネ ), Sophia ( ソ フ ィ ア ), Noelle ( ノ エ ル ) and the beginner Priscilla ( プ リ シ ラ ) are assigned to them. Despite her young age, Priscilla is already considered the second strongest Claymore and is said to have the potential to surpass Teresa. When confronted, however, Priscilla goes beyond her limits and transforms into an awakened creature . Priscilla, who pretends to be “redeemed” according to the organization's laws, then beheads Teresa and kills Sophia and Noelle. Besides Clare, in whom Priscilla has no interest, only Irene survives, who loses an arm in the fight.

Shocked by Teresa's death, Clare carries her head to a representative of the organization and asks him to train her as a claymore as well. However, she does not want the meat of a Yoma, but that of Teresa.

Clare and Raki

Years later, Clare roams the world on behalf of the organization. Their path leads them to a place where a Yoma is suspected. When she enters the village, the people treat her with respect and fear. Only the young Raki ( ラ キ ) doesn't seem to let the rumors about the Claymore deter him and follows her, admiring her, through the town. However, Clare notices that the smell of a Yoma is clinging to him. When he gets home, he has to find out that his supposedly older brother is acknowledging himself as Yoma. He had already killed the whole family some time ago and assumed the shape of Raki's brother. Startled by the presence of Clare, the Yoma decides to flee, but first wants to eat his fill of Raki. At the moment when the Yoma also wants to pounce on Raki, Clare intervenes in the fight and kills the monster. However, she leaves behind the shocked Raki. A short time later he was driven out of the village by the residents, who fear that he too could be a Yoma.

Raki collapses in a sandstorm, but is found by Clare and taken to the nearest town. There he wakes up in a bed in an inn and learns that he has been billeted there by a Claymore. Believing that it could only have been Clare, he rushes out of town and meets a Yoma disguised as a Claymore. The boy recognizes this too late and can only be rescued by Clare at the last moment, whereby she herself accepts serious injuries. As a result of events, Clare forces herself to take Raki with her as her companion. From now on he follows Clare every step of the way through cities infested by Yoma. In between, Clare receives the special order to kill a Claymore and a friend of hers. She sent Clare her black card , which is to be understood as a request for redemption through the hand of the recipient of the card. This assignment quickly makes Raki aware of what kind of beings he is dealing with. Still, he stays by Clare's side.

Fight against the awakened creatures

During an assignment in the town of Rabona, Clare almost gets out of control and threatens to become a Yoma herself. Even though she has passed her critical limit, she can transform herself back through Raki's affection. This is not hidden from the organization. However, she remains silent and sends them along with three other Claymore to fight an awakened creature. However, the Claymore Miria ( ミ リ ア ), Deneve ( デ ネ ヴ ) and Helen ( ヘ レ ン ) have a problem accepting that Clare, who is classified as the weakest of all Claymore, should serve them as support and also drag a boy around with her. Yet they fight their battle within the mountains, but are far inferior to the male awakened creature . In this situation, it turns out that Clare's weak Yoki is ideal for suppressing it to the point where she can sense the Yoma's attacks in advance. As a result, they manage to defeat the monster, but they ask themselves why they had to face such an overpowering opponent. In doing so, they make the statement that everyone has already exceeded their limits but are not fully awakened. So they band together to question the organization's plans.

In a later assignment, Clare is given the task of killing an awakened creature together with Ophelia ( オ フ ィ ー リ ア ). However, she is attacked by the dangerous Ophelia and Raki is used by her as leverage. When Ophelia realizes that Clare is "already awake", she has no holding back and wants to kill both Clare and Raki. Clare tries to keep Raki as far away from the battle as possible and eventually forces him to go their separate ways from now on. In the subsequent fight between Clare and Ophelia, Clare loses her right arm, but is saved by the deserted Irene. Clare learns the vortex blade technique from her rescuer and also receives the right and only remaining arm from Irene. This will enable her to kill Ophelia who has woken up in the meantime.

Separated from Raki, Clare soon falls into the hands of Riful des West , an awakened girl in the form of a young girl and one of the three ends of the house in the deep . She is already holding Claymore Jean and Katea prisoner and torturing them until they turn into awakened beings . In this way she wants to create the strongest allies for a fight against the other ends of the house in the deep . The appearance of another Claymore, Galatea, allows Clare and Jean to survive and return to the organization.

The battle in the north

The organization is sending Clare and another 23 of its 47 claymore to the far north town of Pieta, where an invasion of the Awakened Creatures under the leadership of Isley (a male Awakened) and another In the Deep House is looming. This is where the secretly allied Claymore Miria, Deneve, Helen and Clare meet again.

Almost all the leaders of the six teams are killed in the battle by Rigardo, the silver-eyed lion king. Before he can kill the last leader Miria, he is defeated by the almost awakened Clare. Clare's "awakening" did not happen during the fight, but she had conjured it up out of desperation over her weakness in order to become stronger. Since you cannot force an awakening, she did not succeed entirely, but it took some effort for the other Claymore to recall their human consciousness.

In total, only seven claymore survive this battle. However, they realize that the organization appears to have its own plans and they have been sent back into a losing battle. They escape the remaining attackers but decide not to return to the organization.

The South Campaign

Due to the defeat in Pieta, the organization gives up the north. The surviving Claymore, including Miria, Helen, Deneve and Clare, can hide there unnoticed for seven years and train their skills. But Raki was also in the north at the time of the battle, where he was taken in by Isley and taught by him in sword fighting. There he met Pricilla for the first time, who was also living with Isley at the time. Little did Raki know that Clare was one of the fighting Claymore.

When Isley continues his conquest to the south after years to take on Luciella of the South , the third of the In der Deep House ends , and other Claymore also advance to the north, Clare and her comrades set out in pursuit to the south. Although they try to roam the countries unrecognized, they often meet some of their successors at the Claymore and discover some terrifying developments in the organization.

Now grown up, Raki goes on the hunt for Yoma himself without any supernatural powers. At his side, however, is Priscilla, who helps him track down the Yoma. On their way, Clare and Raki try to find each other again.

Recent events

After the survivors of the battle in the north save the deserted Galatea and two warriors of the organization in the city of Rabona from the Awakened Agatha, several serious developments occur that have a lasting effect on the course of the manga. So Isley and Riful are killed and Priscilla breaks away from Raki in order to kill Teresa again, who she recognized in Clare.

After Miria attacks the organization alone and apparently dies, the remaining survivors decide to attack the organization as well or to save Miria. It turns out that the organization creates the Yoma and also lets the Awakened into the world. However, Miria survived and calls the current warriors to rebellion. The organization then brings three Claymore to life who once held the rank of number 1: The elegant Hysteria, Roxanne of love and hate and Cassandra the dust eater.

However, a member of the organization seems to have plans of his own as Cassandra, Roxanne and Hysteria awaken.

The end of the organization

After the warriors, who have spent seven years in the north, have arrived at the scene of the event, they face the fight against the awakened Hysteria, and can also defeat it. Meanwhile, Cassandra and Roxanne fight each other, and Cassandra wins.

Shortly before that, the merged Raphaela and Luciella, who is also Raphaela's sister, have become a super-awakened one who is running amok on the continent. In the ensuing fight, Priscilla and Clare are sucked into this being, making it a kind of giant lump of Yoma meat. The other women warriors bring this to the gates of Rabona.

In the fight against the organization, Raki is freed by the now rebelling schoolgirls and fights by their side. Several men of the organization and probably all of the people in the deep house are killed in the fight. Finally, every single warrior rebels against the organization. After the victory, Miria arrives in an underground vault, in which the surviving leader of the organization is. He shows Miria a monster and describes this as his real enemy. This is the only reason why the organization Yoma created warriors and awakened ones to have an effective weapon in the fight against these beings. He also tells her that the Yoma were originally humans who were infected with a parasite that turns them into Yoma. Horrified that Miria and all the other warriors had killed people in all that time who were unlucky enough to have been infected with this parasite by the organization, she finally beheads him and kills the alien being.

Raki and some of the other female warriors travel to Rabona. Prior to this, however, Deneve shows Raki almost naked so that he knows that their bodies are different from human bodies, and he will not be frightened if he sees Clare's body should they succeed in freeing them from the lump. Once there, Raki speaks to the lump. Clare, hearing his voice, responds and actually comes out. Both are overjoyed to have found each other again. However, shortly afterwards, Priscilla can also break free. Nine awakened have gathered at the gates of Rabona. Each of them was once a single digit number, and two of them introduce themselves as the last two survivors of the male warrior era. Rabona itself is almost deserted. People have fled after Galatea warned them that a very powerful Awakened - Cassandra, the dust eater - was approaching the city. The awakened attack Cassandra, who apparently wants to get to Priscilla, and Clare realizes that she has apparently become much stronger during her time in the lump, and has also mastered some of the fighting techniques of Raphaela.

Priscilla meanwhile faces another opponent. The child of Dauf and Riful who wants to avenge the death of his parents. And that opponent seems to be really up to Priscilla.

Creatures

In the fantasy world of the manga, a multitude of different beings populate the continent, some of which are Yoma or another type of Yoma.

Yoma

Yoma are carnivorous demons that feed on humans. As is common for predators, they usually prefer the bowels. Most of them are comparable in height to humans, but some are also slightly taller and much more muscular. In addition, many of them have spines that grow on their backs, as well as fangs, claws and pointed ears that give them an animal-like appearance. Yoma are i. d. Usually stronger, faster and more resilient than humans, and can regenerate much better. Only injuries that destroy many of her organs or her head can kill Yoma. In addition, they can change their shape and look like people, so that they are not recognized as Yoma by other people. When a yoma eats a person's brain, they can absorb their knowledge and memories and impersonate the person who was killed. Yoma are recognized by the warriors by their Yoki, which they involuntarily emit. Few Yoma are as strong as the warriors or stronger that they are almost always defeated in a fight against them.

There is a subspecies of flying yoma, which have wings similar to those of bats. From the air they can attack the warriors more easily. If a warrior wants to kill a flying Yoma, she has to jump high in the air or throw her sword precisely.

Claymore

These female warriors are half human and half yoma. By putting the blood and flesh of a Yoma into a human body, one can create hybrids. But only women are made hybrids. Although only half of their bodies are made up of Yoma meat, they are almost always stronger, faster and more efficient than Yoma. In addition, thanks to their human intelligence and special combat training, they can usually kill Yoma with ease. The warriors differ from humans in that they have light blonde to white hair and silver eyes. Some of them also have pointed ears, which are somewhat reminiscent of elves. They are much stronger than humans, can regenerate better and no longer age.

They are called "Claymore" by the people because of their swords, but the organization itself has no name. The warriors are able to track down Yoma. You can also activate your Yoki to become stronger. At 10 percent of the yoki, their eyes change from silver to yoma eyes. At 30 percent the face changes, fangs grow and the warrior looks very similar to a Yoma. From 50 percent the body changes, the warriors get longer limbs and claws. From 80 percent, they have changed so much that they usually no longer manage to transform themselves back. You then go relentlessly towards 100 percent and from then on you become an awakened being. To avoid this fate, they ask their friends, usually other women warriors, to kill them.

In the course of the plot, however, some women warriors manage to activate more than 80 percent of their yoki and still not become awakened beings, but rather return to their human or semi-human form.

Awakened beings

Awakened beings used to be warriors themselves, but they activated 100 percent of their yoki and went beyond their limits. This made them a kind of yoma themselves. Awakened ones are much stronger than Yoma and female warriors. Also, they all look different, while the normal yoma are the same. It usually takes four to five female warriors to defeat an awakened one, at least one of whom must be in the single digits. Awakened ones can regenerate relatively quickly and can create weapons out of their own bodies. Awakened ones can transform from their Yoma form into their previous, human form and vice versa. Unlike Yoma, however, they can only look the way they looked as humans and cannot change their shape at will.

Many awakened in the act are masculine. This is because in the early days of the organization, men were also turned into half-human warriors. There was a problem with the men, however. Because awakening felt very enjoyable for them or was comparable to sexual pleasure, almost all of them had exceeded their limits after a short time. As a result, the organization turned only women into hybrids. However, shortly afterwards, the organization had also decided to simply release the male warriors as awake, although they would be a danger to men and women.

After becoming an Awakened hybrid, they usually retain their human intelligence and memories. However, the bloodthirsty nature of a Yoma is added, which means that the awakened are often very cruel and sadistic. For a long time it was believed that the Awakened had completely lost their human feelings and emotions. However, it later turns out that this is often not the case. B. sees Priscilla, Ophelia and later also Isley.

Among the awakened there are three who are called "those in the deep house". They were once warriors who were once number one in the organization. Their names are "Silver King Isley from the north", "Riful from the west" and "Luciella from the south".

Since the organization does not want to admit that the Awakened - also known as wolverines - used to be human and then mixed race, it is pretended in front of the public that they are simply very old Yoma who have become very strong over time have become, and have developed an enormous hunger.

Those who eat deep down

The deep eaters ( 深淵 喰 い ) are women who at first glance resemble the warriors. However, their eyes are sewn shut and they also seem to have no consciousness of their own. While the warriors are hybrids, half made of Yoma meat, half of them are made of the meat of Awakened One. Just like the awakened ones, they can create weapons from their body parts and regenerate very quickly. The deep eaters were created to hunt down the “deep house ends”. Their strength grows with the larger yoki of their opponents, so they are harmless to humans, but a great threat to "those in the deep end of the house" as well as to the Claymores themselves. They could even destroy Isley that way. They appear much later in the manga.

The people behind the organization

Almost nothing is known about them, except that they create the hybrids who fight against Yoma. After a job has been fulfilled, one of them comes to the place that requested help and picks up the payment. What kind of beings they are is unclear, but that they are normal people is quite unlikely. Because on the one hand they do not age over long periods of time, and on the other hand they are probably also able to overpower and kill a Yoma in order to get his flesh and blood for the purpose of creating hybrids. And on top of that, they can apparently easily track down the Yoki of their protégés.

Characters

Clare ( ク レ ア , Kurea )
Clare is the protagonist of the story. At a young age, she is a Yoma hostage and is freed by Teresa, whereupon she follows her every step of the way. After Teresa's death, she joined the organization and had parts of Teresa planted. She is number 47 on the organization, which means that she is ranked as the weakest of all the claymore. However, Clare does everything possible to get stronger in order to kill Priscilla one day. After the battle in Pieta, she deserted the organization with the other surviving Claymore.
Teresa ( テ レ サ , Teresa )
Teresa is number 1 in the organization in her day, the strongest Claymore. She is also called Teresa with the faint smile . Her strength lies in the fact that she perceives the so-called yoki (the charisma of a yoma) very precisely, but hardly has to bring up her own yoki in combat. In an attack on a city, she kills the robbers and is therefore supposed to be executed by the other Claymore. However, after the fight has been won, she is deviously killed by the awakened Priscilla.
Raki ( ラ キ , raki )
Raki is an orphan boy whose family was eaten by a yoma. However, after Clare rescues him, he is chased from his village and follows Clare. He vows to get stronger in order to eventually protect Clare. After being forced to part with Clare and heading north to look for her, he meets Isley and Priscilla. He is taken in by both of them, not knowing what they are. Isley has given him sword fighting lessons over the years, while the child-like Pricilla develops a special relationship with him. Years later, the adult Raki and the still childish Pricilla roam the country together on the hunt for Yoma. But Raki is also looking for Clare.
Priscilla ( プ リ シ ラ , Purishira )
Priscilla is number 2 in the organization from an early age and could have been Teresa's successor. However, she wakes up while she is on duty to execute Teresa. She is one of the most powerful Awakened Beings , even though she appears to be in a state of mental and physical regression. Isley takes care of her for a long time, just as he later takes in Raki. Priscilla and Raki seem to develop a special relationship during this time. It helps the adult raki to recognize the Yoma among people.

The organization's claymore have many features in common: Through their symbiosis with a Yoma, they all have blonde hair and silver-gray eyes, among other things. Furthermore, all except for the current numbers 1 and 2 (Alicia and Beth) wear gray uniforms with armor and an oversized two-handed sword . For internal differentiation, each claymore receives its own symbol after their training, which is attached to the armor and the sword.

Supporting characters

Isley ( イ ー ス レ イ , Ēsleigh , called Easley in the German translation of the anime )
Isley is the strongest male Awakened, and probably the strongest Awakened ever. He was number one in the organization when most warriors were male. Later he is the leader of an army of the Awakened who want to begin their campaign south from Pieta. In the anime he is Priscilla's lover, but in the manga he is her subordinate. In the manga he has an almost fatherly relationship with Raki, and as a result his human side becomes stronger and stronger over time, so that he eats people less and less.
Riful ( リ フ ル , Rifuru )
Riful is the second of the "In the deep house ends". She was the very first female warrior to rank number one. But because she was too young to control her yoki, she woke up after a short time. She sometimes catches female warriors to torture them until they wake up to escape the pain. She then gathers the new awakened as an army. Your lover is Dauf.
  • Rigardo : Rigardo, also known as the “silver-eyed lion king”, was once the number two of the organization. For an awakened person it is quite small, but all the faster and more skillful. In his awakened form he looks almost like a humanoid lion, and his eyes have retained their silver color despite the awakening. In Pieta he defeats several high-ranking women warriors, but is finally killed by the almost awakened Clare.
  • Dauf : Dauf was once the number three of the organization. As a warrior, he was a gentle giant, but not very bright. Now, as an awakened person, he is sadistic and cruel, but his intelligence has not changed as a result of the awakening. His special abilities are that he can shoot iron rods from his fingers and mouth, which inflict serious injuries on the opponent. In addition, its skin is very hard and difficult to penetrate with a sword. He is Riful's lover.
  • Ophelia : Ophelia is number four in the organization. She is very cruel and sadistic and takes pleasure in killing people and other warriors. When she is badly injured in a fight, she wakes up, but is initially very confused and not aware of it. Finally, she lets herself be defeated by Clare, because she does not want to live as an awake.
  • Irene : Irene used to be number two or later three of the organization. She was badly injured and maimed in the fight with the almost-awakened Priscilla. She then left the organization, her whereabouts remained unknown for a long time. She later took care of the previously wounded Clare, taught her a new fighting technique and gave her her remaining arm, as Clare had previously lost her own arm in the fight against Ophelia.
  • Miria : Miria is the fastest female warrior in the organization, and number six at that. Her special fighting technique is that she can move very quickly for a short time, faster than any other warrior and most Awakened. This also gives her the nickname “Phantom Miria”. But this technique is very strenuous, so that it uses up all of its strength and is almost helpless afterwards. She leaves the organization after the Battle of Pieta.
  • Helen : Helen is number 22 in the organization. She is often very snotty and defiant, and quite hateful towards other warriors. Her special ability is that she can extend her arms and legs enormously in combat. She is Deneve's best friend.
  • Deneve : Deneve is number 15 in the organization. She is rather reserved and quiet, but also a perfectionist, and expects this from the other warriors. Since she is not very strong - for 15th place - she often blames herself. She has the ability to regenerate almost as quickly as an awakened one. She and her friend Helen leave the organization after the Battle of Pieta.
  • Jean : Jean is number nine in the organization. Clare saves her from becoming a fully awakened one, and in thanks she accompanies her afterwards and even goes against the organization. Her fighting technique is that she can rotate her sword arm up to 21 times around its axis and then thrust forward with a whirling sword blow that inflicts severe injuries on even the most awake. In the anime, she dies while helping Clare in the final fight against Priscilla not to become an awakened one, but using up all of her life energy in the process. In the manga this already happens in the fight against Rigardo.
  • Galatea : Galatea is number three in the organization. To a limited extent she can influence the yoki of her opponents, and her strength increases the most of all warriors when she releases her yoki. Outwardly, she is loyal to the organization, but often helps warriors who want to break away from it. In the manga, she ultimately leaves the organization and offers resistance.
  • Flora : Flora is number eight in the organization. Their technique is the wind cutting edge, which is similar to Irene's vortex blade in many ways. She has a very gentle endeavor and is therefore easily underestimated by her comrades. She is killed by Rigardo in Pieta.
  • Undine : Undine is the number eleven of the organization which is the only female warrior to carry two swords. Her physique appears very muscular, but later it turns out that this appearance is solely due to the arbitrary manipulation of her yoki. She seems aggressive, cheeky and unfriendly and treats weak warriors without any respect. That impression also changes quickly when Deneve learns her backstory. Undine lost her friend in a fight and has been plagued with guilt ever since. She appropriated her sword and vowed not to lose another comrade because of her own weakness. She is killed by Rigardo.
