Clyde Kerr

Clyde Rudolph Kerr Jr. (born July 27, 1943 , † August 6, 2010 in New Orleans ) was an American jazz trumpeter and music teacher who was active in the music scene in New Orleans.

Live and act

Clyde Kerr Jr. began playing the trumpet when he was nine and graduated from St. Augustine High School . In the early 1960s he played with Dave Bartholomew , in whose band he took part in recordings with Fats Domino for Imperial . After studying at Xavier University, he initially worked as a studio musician , u. a. for The Jackson Five , The O'Jays , Aretha Franklin , Tony Bennett and the Neville Brothers . After various teaching activities in the New Orleans area, taught at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts for 16 years ; his students included Nicholas Payton , Terence Blanchard , Christian Scott , Trombone Shorty , Dave Mooney, Adonis Rose and Irvin Mayfield. I.a. with Alvin Red Tyler , Kidd Jordan and Alvin Fielder he formed the Improvisational Arts Quintet in the early 1980s . In the field of rhythm & blues and jazz he worked a. a. with Johnny Adams , Patti LaBelle , Dr. John , Allen Toussaint ( Life, Love And Faith , 1972), and most recently with Michael White ( Jazz from the Soul of New Orleans , 2002). In the field of jazz he was involved in nine recording sessions between 1961 and 2002. Shortly before his death in August 2010 at the age of 67, Kerr released an album under his own name ( This is Now! ).
