Cobi as a figure of a fountain in Barcelona

Cobi was the official mascot of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona .

description

Cobi was a Cubist- style Catalan shepherd dog . His three hairs were characteristic. The figure was presented in different outfits at various Olympic events. The cubist look was chosen as a tribute to the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso . The reactions to Cobi were initially mixed, for example the taz ruled that Cobi could also represent a pig. In the course of the Summer Olympics, however, the mascot won the sympathy of the population and developed into a popular merchandising motif.

Emergence

The figure of Cobi was created by the Spanish designer Javier Mariscal . For a competition to find the official mascot of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Mariscal submitted various designs: a shrimp, a palm with the name Palmerita and Petra , the later mascot of the 1992 Summer Paralympics . When these suggestions were not well received, he designed the mascot in the form of a stylized dog, which he based on "Julian", a character in his comic series Los garriris from the 1970s. The decision for this design was made in 1988. The name Cobi refers to COOB'92, the abbreviation for the organizing committee of the games; it was also selected because of its ease of pronunciation in most of the national languages.

Others

To promote Cobi and the Olympic Games, the animated series The Cobi Troupe was developed in 1990 under the direction of Javier Mariscal. In a total of 26 episodes, which were aimed primarily at children between the ages of 5 and 12, various adventures by Cobi and his friends, including the Paralympics mascot Petra, were shown. The series was sold to 24 television channels.
