history

On April 8, 1929, the Essen sales company for natural beverages in Essen filled the first Coca-Cola bottle in Germany. In the first year 5,840 boxes were sold. In 1930 Coca-Cola GmbH was founded, which, under the direction of Max Keith, replaced the Essen-based sales company for natural beverages . More than 100,000 boxes were sold in Germany as early as 1933. In 1934 there were already more than 120 concessionaires , and a bottling plant was built in Frankfurt am Main . The final breakthrough for Coca-Cola came with the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . The breakthrough in Germany is closely linked to Max Schmeling . The boxing world champion became a concessionaire and prominent figurehead of the brand in Germany after his sports career in 1957.

Keith himself was not a member of the NSDAP , but he was well-disposed towards the German rulers at the time. In 1936 a competitor of his, Karl Flach von Afri-Cola , traveled to the USA to inspect bottling plants and stole a couple of crown caps marked “ kosher ”. As a result, Coca-Cola was denounced in Germany as a “Jewish-American company headed by Harold Hirsch”, who was then on the supervisory board. Keith asked Woodruff to remove Hirsch from the board of directors. However, this refused and is said to have said: "My policy is called Coca-Cola". Keith then broke with the German regime; However, this did not detract from the success of Coca-Cola. Even after the Second World War broke out, the Coca-Cola business continued in Germany. However, it was becoming increasingly difficult for the German subsidiary of the Coca-Cola Company to procure raw materials. So in 1940 she invented a new soft drink: Fanta (derived from Fantasie ). Fanta (initially made on a whey basis ) secured the existence of Coca-Cola GmbH when the production of Coca-Cola had to be stopped for the time being in 1942.

In 1949 Coca-Cola production was resumed. Fanta remained popular, in the meantime, however, no longer milchhaltig but as oranges - lemonade . In the following years the Fanta brand became internationally known. In 1962 a new variety was introduced with Fanta Clear Lemon , which also became internationally known from 1968 under the name Sprite .

In July 2003, Coca-Cola GmbH relocated its headquarters from Essen to Berlin in order to be able to work even more economically under one roof with CCEAG , the largest Coca-Cola concessionaire at the time.

After bottling, sales and distribution in Germany were initially divided between different licensees, there has only been one major bottler since September 2007: CCEAG , which, unlike the bottlers in most other countries, belongs directly to the Coca-Cola group.

In 2013, Coca-Cola sold 3.8 billion liters of non-alcoholic beverages in Germany. Since March 25, 2013, the company has its headquarters on Stralauer Allee in Berlin-Friedrichshain ; previously it was located on Friedrichstrasse in Berlin-Mitte for almost 10 years .

2016 was from the CCEAG the Coca-Cola GmbH ( CCEG ). This merged in May 2016 with Coca-Cola Enterprises and Coca-Cola Iberian Partners to form Coca-Cola European Partners , the largest independent bottler of Coca-Cola. That is why Coca-Cola Erfrischungsgetränke GmbH was renamed again in August 2016 to Coca-Cola European Partners Deutschland GmbH .
