Colin Campbell (Bishop)

Colin Campbell KHCS (born July 12, 1931 in Antigonish , † January 17, 2012 in Halifax ) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Antigonish .

Life

Colin Campbell studied at Saint Mary's University Halifax and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Halifax on May 26, 1956 . After serving as a pastor, he became the first director of social services for the Archdiocese of Halifax. He was vicar general of the diocese for 11 years and taught at several schools, such as the Maritime School of Social Work . He was a columnist for The Casket (Antigonish) and The Chronicle Herald and dealt with social issues. He was a Spiritualist at the Saint Augustine Seminary in Toronto.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Antigonish on December 12, 1986. The Archbishop of Halifax, James Martin Hayes , donated him episcopal ordination on March 19 the next year ; Co- consecrators were Donat Chiasson , Archbishop of Moncton , and William Edward Power , Bishop Emeritus of Antigonish.

He was also Grand Prior of the Canada-Atlantic Lieutenancy of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . He was an honorary conventual chaplain of the Order of Malta .

Campbell was a member of the Board of Governors of Saint Mary's University Halifax for 14 years and chaired it from 1978 to 1983. In 2011 he was honored with an honorary doctorate , primarily for his commitment to founding and implementing the Atlantic School of Theology of the Second Vatican Council .

His resignation was granted on October 26, 2002 by John Paul II.
