Colin Alexander Patterson (born May 11, 1960 in Rexdale , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The right winger played over 500 games for the Calgary Flames and Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League between 1983 and 1993 . With the Flames, he won the Stanley Cup in the 1989 playoffs . He also played lacrosse in his youth and won the bronze medal with the Canadian national team at the 1982 World Cup.
Career
Colin Patterson played in his youth for the Royal York Royals in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League , the secondary junior league of his home province of Ontario, which was located below the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . This was due, among other things, to the fact that Patterson also operated other sports at a high level in addition to ice hockey, especially lacrosse . In this regard, he represented the Canadian national lacrosse team at the 1982 World Cup in Baltimore , where he won the bronze medal with the team. This also ensured that he did not switch from junior to professional, but first attended Clarkson University in the United States. For their ice hockey team, the Golden Knights , the winger appeared as a regular scorer in the ECAC , recording around 50 points in a little more than 30 games in each of his three seasons, while he was part of the league's Second All-Star Team in 1983 chose. Without previously being considered in an NHL Entry Draft , he drew the attention of scouts of the National Hockey League (NHL) with these performances , so that he was equipped with a contract by the Calgary Flames in March 1983 .
The Flames used Patterson only briefly with their farm team , the Colorado Flames , in the Central Hockey League , so that he ran regularly in the NHL from October 1983. As a result, the Canadian spent eight years in Calgary and was primarily entrusted with defensive tasks, so he regularly formed a series of attacks with Doug Risebrough and Richard Kromm . The greatest success of his career was winning the Stanley Cup in the playoffs in 1989 , which was also the first title in franchise history. In addition, the Canadian had reached his career record in the NHL in the 1988/89 season with 38 points from 74 games.
After Patterson had missed almost the entire season 1990/91 due to a knee injury, the Flames gave him in October 1991 without further consideration to the Buffalo Sabers . In Buffalo he spent his last two NHL years before he let his active career end in the 1993/94 season at HK Olimpija Ljubljana in Slovenia. In total, he had completed 589 NHL games and scored 234 points scorer.
