geography

location

The association of municipalities was located about 20 to 30 kilometers (as the crow flies) south and south-east of the city of Angoulême in the cultural landscape of the Angoumois in the Charente region on the border with the Périgord . The altitudes of the connected communities ranged between approx. 72 and approx. 227 meters above sea level. d. M.

Rivers

The most important rivers were the Tude and the Lizonne , on whose banks grain , oil and paper mills were once operated. Both rivers drain south over the Dronne and the Dordogne into the Gironde .

Floors

Below the humus layer there are meter-thick limestone deposits , which indicate that the Charente formed the bottom of a prehistoric sea for a long time.

climate

The temperate climate of the region is clearly influenced by the Atlantic ; excessive heat in summer as well as night frosts in winter are very rare.

Population development

year 1999 2012
Residents 4,990 5,227

The greater Angoulême area has been attracting immigrants for decades due to its positive economic development.

economy

In earlier times the population lived essentially on the principle of self-sufficiency ; The city of Angoulême, which functions as a religious and cultural center as well as a craft and mercantile center, was too far away to buy agricultural products. As early as the Middle Ages, oil and grain mills settled on the banks of the rivers and streams, and since the end of the Middle Ages they have been supplemented, and in some cases replaced, by paper mills . The soils of the municipalities belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but as a result of the sales crisis for wine and wine products, only little viticulture is still practiced in the municipality.

Attractions

The rock grotto of La Quina in the area of the municipality of Gardes-le-Pontaroux , which was visited by people in prehistoric times, is the most important regional evidence of the Paleolithic . There are also some megalithic tombs ( dolmen ) along the Charente and its catchment area, but these are mostly poorly preserved due to the limestone slabs used ; the best preserved tomb is the Dolmen de Chez Vinaigre near Ronsenac . Almost every municipality has a rather small - mostly well-preserved and often recognized as a monument historique - Romanesque church. The churches of Édon , Chadurie , Vaux-Lavalette u. a. impress with their rural ambience and their architectural and ornamental diversity; the rock church of Gurat is more of a curiosity. Several smaller - mostly privately owned - late medieval castles and country estates ( châteaux , manoirs or logis ) enrich the cultural offer; the Logis de Puygâty near Chadurie has been converted into a bed & breakfast hotel.
