Career

societies

Washington grew up in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, where he attended Westfield Junior School and played football. After leaving school he worked as a postman and played for St. Ives Town FC in the United Counties League, a regional amateur league. In 2012 he moved to fifth division AFC Newport County for £ 5,000 , with whom he rose to the fourth division. Although they had missed direct promotion as third, they were able to prevail in the first purely Welsh playoff promotion final at Wembley Stadium against Wrexham FC . In the Football League Two 2013/14 they reached the 14th place. Washington moved to the third division Peterborough United before the end of the season . As sixth, the team missed direct promotion to the second division and then failed in the promotion playoff semi-finals. In the 2014/15 season he scored 13 goals in 40 league games, but in the end were missing at least six points to reach the promotion playoffs. In the 2015/16 season he played only 25 league games for Peterborough, in which he scored ten goals. In January 2016, he moved to second division Queens Park Rangers for £ 2.5million . From 2018 he played for one season at Sheffield United before moving to Heart of Midlothian in Scotland . After the "Hearts" were relegated from the first Scottish league, Washington moved back to England. He signed a contract with third division promoted Charlton Athletic .

Northern Ireland national team

As the son of a Scottish mother and grandson of a Northern Irish grandfather, although he was born in England, he can also play for Scotland and Northern Ireland. He received his first invitation to the Northern Irish national team in March 2016 and was used for the first time on March 24 against Wales in the first half. Four days later he scored the 1-0 winner against Slovenia with his first international goal.

On May 18, 2016, he was appointed by team manager Michael O'Neill to the provisional squad with 28 players for the European Championship finals.

In the first test match in preparation for the European Championship, he also scored a goal, this time the interim 2-0 in a 3-0 win against the Belarusians who were not qualified for the European Championship . A day later he was nominated for the final EM squad. In the first tournament game against Poland, he was used when the score was 0: 1 in the final third. In the second and third game against Ukraine and Germany he played from the beginning. The team reached the round of 16 against Wales, where he sat again initially on the bench and only came onto the field in the final stages of the game. Northern Ireland then put themselves behind with an own goal and eliminated. In the qualification for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the EM , he met Germany again and was used in eight out of ten games. The Northern Irish reached second behind Germany in the playoffs of the group runners-up, where they were eliminated after a 0-1 home defeat and a goalless draw in the second leg against Switzerland. In the UEFA Nations League 2018/19 he did not play. In qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship , he was used in three of the eight group games, including the 0-2 home defeat against Germany. In the end it was only enough for 3rd place. Although the Northern Irish only finished third in their Nations League group, they still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
