story

The yacht was named Cor Caroli after the star of the same name Cor Caroli in the constellation Hounds . The home port of the boat was Varna. In 1976 the captain and sailor Georgi Georgiev was the first Bulgarian to take part in the "Ostar 76" regatta. The Single-Handed Transatlantic Race was launched in 1960 as a transatlantic regatta for single-handed sailors , takes place every four years and leads from Plymouth in England to the east coast of the USA (mostly Newport , more rarely New York or Boston ).

Following this regatta, he sailed from Newport to Havana , where he started his one-handed circumnavigation on December 20, 1976. It led through the Panama Canal , across the Marquesas in the Pacific Ocean , Fiji and Suva to the Australian port of Darwin . From there he steered to Cape Town , crossed the South Atlantic and reached Havana again on December 20, 1977. He was the first Bulgarian to sail around the world and wrote Bulgarian shipping history. The trip took him 201 days, 21 hours and 36 minutes, which was also a record for this size of boat.

In 1979 the Cor Caroli was handed over to the Naval Museum in Varna.

Trivia

In 1978 the Bulgarian Post issued a postage stamp with the yacht as a motif; their value was 23 stotinki . In 1992, to promote sailing and to commemorate the first circumnavigation of the world, the international Cor Caroli regatta was launched in Varna, which is held annually in the Black Sea.
