Cornelius Bischoff

Cornelius Bischoff (born September 4, 1928 in Harburg ; † June 27, 2018 in Seevetal ) was a German lawyer , screenwriter and literary translator from Turkish into German . He made a name for himself in particular as a translator for Yaşar Kemal .

Life

Bischoff was born in 1928 as the son of the German carpenter Eduard Bischoff and a Jewish Turkish woman and fled with them to Istanbul in 1939 , where he continued his school education at St. Georgs College . From 1944 to 1945 he and his family were temporarily interned in the Anatolian Çorum , like many of the exiles . After graduating from high school in Turkey, he began to study law in Istanbul in 1948, which he continued in Hamburg, where he passed his legal state examination in 1954. After working as a lawyer for more than twenty years, he began working as a literary translator from Turkish, including Orhan Pamuk , and as a screenwriter in 1978.

His translations of the works of Yaşar Kemal have received much praise. Kemal himself once called Bischoff's translations of his books into German “better than the original”. Bischoff also wrote scripts for films, such as the children's film Gülibik .

9 July 2011 he was awarded the Turkish city of Çorum the honorary citizenship . Cornelius Bischoff died in June 2018 at the age of 89.
