Cornelius Johnson Otis (* 12. July 1943 in Richmond , Virginia ) is a former American American football poker players. He played, among other things, as a guard in the National Football League (NFL) for the Baltimore Colts .

Player career

college

Cornelius Johnson attended high school in his hometown . After graduating from high school, he studied at Virginia Union University . There he played as a linebacker from 1963 to 1966 for the Virginia Union Panthers , a sub-class football team .

NFL

Johnson was drafted 204th in the eighth round by the Baltimore Colts in 1967 . The Baltimore team's head coach , Don Shula , deployed him as a guard in the team's offensive line to protect quarterbacks Johnny Unitas and Earl Morrall and to block the way into the opponent's end zone for Tom Matte , the Colts halfback . Already in his rookie season 1968 Johnson was able to move into the play-offs with the Colts after they won 13 of 14 games in the regular season . After a 24-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings , the team met in the NFL championship game on the Cleveland Browns , who had no chance in their 34-0 defeat. The victory meant qualification for the "AFL-NFL Championship Game" , which was later renamed Super Bowl III . There the Colts met the New York Jets , which were managed by Weeb Ewbank , and whose charismatic quarterback Joe Namath had guaranteed his team a victory before the game. He followed up his announcement with deeds. Although Johnson and the Colts were favored for victory, the Jets held the upper hand 16-7.

In 1970 Don McCafferty had taken over the coaching position with the Colts. He led the team to the second Super Bowl . After winning eleven of 14 games in the regular season, Johnson and his team from Maryland first met the Cincinnati Bengals , trained by Paul Brown , who were defeated 17-0. The opponents in the following AFC Championship Game were the Oakland Raiders . John Madden's team suffered a 27-17 defeat in this game. In Super Bowl V , the Colts met the Tom Landry- supervised Dallas Cowboys , who had to admit defeat to Johnson's team at 16:13.

Cornelius Johnson played in Baltimore for three more years. In 1971 he failed with the Colts in the AFC Championship Game at the Miami Dolphins , the team of his former coach Don Shula, 21-0. After two more unsuccessful playing years, Cornelius Johnson ended his career after the 1973 season.

After the playing career

Cornelius Johnson married after his playing career and then operating on Hawaii a helicopter - airline . A stroke left him blind in one eye . After suffering from diabetes , his right lower leg had to be amputated .
