Corning is located in southwest Iowa on both sides of the East Nodaway River , the eastern headwaters of the Nodaway River that flows into the Missouri River . The city is about 100 km east of the Missouri River, which forms the border with Nebraska . The border with the neighboring state of Missouri to the south is around 50 km from Corning.
The geographical coordinates of Corning are 40 ° 59'24 "north latitude and 94 ° 44'27" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 4.09 km² and is located in the Quincy Township . A smaller part of the city extends into Jasper Township .
Neighboring towns of Corning are Prescott (8.2 miles east-northeast), Lenox (26.3 km southeast), Gravity (16.1 miles south), Nodaway (11.9 miles west-southwest), and Carbon (13.1 km northwest).

The US Highway 34 extends in the east-west direction along the southern border of Corning. At the height of the city center, Iowa intersects Highway 148 , which runs in a north-south direction as the main road through Corning. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
In the northeast-southwest direction runs a railway line for the freight traffic of the BNSF Railway through Corning.
With the Corning Municipal Airport there is a small airfield in the west of the city area. The nearest commercial airport is Des Moines International Airport (154 km northeast).

The first whites in the area of what is now the city was a colony of French Ikarians that was established in 1854. Four years later the place was incorporated as an independent municipality.
After the first administrative seat of Adams County was in the now defunct town of Quincy, the county's residents voted in 1872 to move to Corning.
