Coroma is a town in the Potosí department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Coroma is the central place of the canton Coroma in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Uyuni in the province of Antonio Quijarro . The village is located at an altitude of 3819  m on the banks of the Río Coroma on the eastern edge of the alluvial plain of the Río Marquez , which flows into the southern part of Lake Poopo about 45 kilometers north of Coroma .

Coroma is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The climate of the region is arid and a typical daytime climate , in which the mean temperature fluctuation is more pronounced during the day than during the course of the seasons.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 9 ° C (see climate diagram Pampa Aullagas) and fluctuates only insignificantly between 5 ° C in June and July and 11 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is around 300 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and only a few months with sufficient moisture, the wettest month is January with just over 70 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Coroma lies at a distance of 284 km by road northwest of Potosí , the capital of the department.

From Potosí, the Ruta 1 highway leads northwest via Tarapaya , Yocalla and Ventilla and after 203 kilometers reaches the town of Challapata . From here, Ruta 30 leads south via Santiago de Huari and Sevaruyo towards Uyuni at the Salar de Uyuni salt lake of the same name . Twenty-two kilometers south of Sevaruyo, a side road branches off in an easterly direction to Coroma .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Uyuni 43.4 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
