She believes he has returned to the family home in Coral Lake, which is currently for sale. Once there, Haley finds her father unconscious and injured in the basement. Reviews and grossing results

The film received a positive rating from 83 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics.

The film critic Antje Wessels notes that in the extremely positive response from critics, in particular the renunciation of humor is positively emphasized by many, which is also absolutely understandable, after all, in the profession of animal horror , which is far from logic and realism, many stumbling blocks are simply avoided with winking and irony What Alexandre Aja and his scriptwriters Michael and Shawn Rasmussen do without: “Your film is serious and the immediate danger from the voracious reptiles is omnipresent.” This ensures that the oppressive atmosphere, additionally fueled by the very reduced setting, is maintained for a long time stay, continues Wessels. Short but effective peaks of violence and a handful of jumpscares , on the other hand, particularly satisfied the adrenaline junkies. Especially for a film that was shot on a budget of just 13.5 million US dollars, the effects specialists would have done a great job here. The film is also good at the authentic flair, created through filming in which the actors had to fight their way through real water and real mud, according to the film critic.

The production cost of $ 13.5 million is offset by worldwide cinema revenues of $ 91.5 million.
