Cynthia Barcomi Friedman (* 29. May 1963 as Cynthia Barcomi in Seattle , Washington , United States ) is an American dancer , pastry chef , TV chef , entrepreneur and cookbook author . She lives and works in Berlin.

Life

Childhood and adolescence

She grew up with her parents (with Jewish roots) as the youngest of three sisters in Seattle, Washington state in the United States. Her father was a lawyer and her mother a housewife. In 1979 Barcomi attended Emma Willard School in Troy , New York, United States . After finishing school at boarding school, she went to Columbia University until 1985 , where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in philosophy and theater studies .

In the summer of 1984 she studied at the Circle in the Square Theater School in New York City .

Move to Berlin

Barcomi came to West Berlin all alone in 1985 and worked as a trained dancer. At first she had difficulties establishing herself, also because she didn't know anyone and didn't speak German. When she started her dance training, she got to know other dancers and began to gain a foothold in Berlin. During her studies she was already in Europe several times, for example she attended the Sorbonne in Paris , and in Florence a study program at Columbia University. At first, her parents tried to convince her that Paris would be a better choice than Berlin. As a passionate dancer, however, she chose Berlin, because she had already inspired German dance theater in New York, especially Pina Bausch's technique . So she went to her adopted home Berlin to live out this inspiration of German dance theater.

Company formation

Barcomi's coffee roastery in Berlin-Kreuzberg

After the birth of her second daughter, she began working on a future after dancing in 1993. Baking and cooking were already one of her passions in her childhood. American baking specialties should be a big part of your business plan.

With only 15,000 DM (approx. 7,670 euros) equity that she had received from her family, she tried to convince various financial service providers and the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce of her idea of a "café with coffee roastery". Many financial institutions refused to give her the necessary start-up capital, among other things because of her lack of German citizenship and the previously non-existent market for American baked goods. Only with the help of a guarantee bank was she able to finance her first company.

In 1994 she finally founded Barcomi's Café & Kaffeerösterei at Bergmannstrasse 21 in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg , where she sells her baking specialties and roasted coffee beans .

Since then, customers such as the gourmet department of the Berlin Kaufhaus des Westens , the Hotel Madison in Friedrichstrasse , the Hotel Adlon at the Brandenburg Gate or the Vitra Design Museum in Prenzlauer Berg have been among their customers.

In 1997 she opened her second, larger café, " Barcomi's Deli ". At this café, too, she should have to prove her powers of persuasion - so her house bank refused to finance the start-up capital. It was only with the Berliner Volksbank that she found a partner who provided her with the start-up capital. In 2010, the freed up ancillary business was integrated into the café, so the deli had twice as many seats as when it opened. It was on the second courtyard of the Sophie-Gips-yards in the Sophienstraße 21 in the Berlin district of Mitte . The deli-café had to be abandoned in June 2020 due to the absence of guests due to the corona pandemic.

In 2009 she founded " Cynthia Barcomi Kitchenware " with her eldest daughter Esmé . Under this brand, Barcomi and her daughter sell their self-designed baking molds, kitchen utensils and an apron collection for professionals and at home. The products can be purchased in their stores as well as in the online shop, in selected kitchen specialty stores and on Shopping TV channels. Esmé also expanded the catering and special cakes business areas.

Television career

With its American baking specialties, Barcomi has achieved a high level of awareness not only in Berlin, but also throughout Germany. She is repeatedly invited by TV stations as a baking specialist, so she was or can be seen in the following TV formats:

Brand ambassador

Since the beginning of 2014, Barcomi has been a brand ambassador for a US manufacturer of electric kitchen appliances on the German market. As an ambassador, Barcomi develops a wide variety of recipes every month, demonstrating her baking skills and the various possible uses for the manufacturer's kitchen appliances, products and appliances.

Author

In addition to her baking and cookbooks, Barcomi also writes for magazines and journals , her articles can be read in Vital , Cooking & Enjoying, Baking Heaven and LECKER Bakery , among others . Since January 2015 she has been writing a monthly column in the Living at Home magazine, which is part of the Gruner + Jahr Verlag .

You can also read it as a guest author on various internet blogs , for example on the Serious About Food blog by KitchenAid or for EDITED The Blog . She also runs her own blog where she writes about her public life and work.

On March 8, 2016, Barcomi and Ulf Meyer zu Küingdorf published their sixth baking book entitled "Cheesecakes, Pies & Tartes" at Mosaik Verlag.

Marriages and families

Today she lives in Berlin-Zehlendorf not far from the Schlachtensee with her second husband Harvey Friedman , an American film and theater actor. The two met in 1994 and got married in 2003. She has two children with him today. Her two daughters Esmé and Coco from their first marriage also belong to the family.
