Cyril Vasiľ SJ (born April 10, 1965 in Košice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak religious and apostolic administrator of the Košice eparchy .

Life

Cyril Vasiľ studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Roman Catholic Theological Cyril and Methodius Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava from 1982 to 1987 . He received on 14 June 1987 the Bishop of Križevci , Slavomir Miklovš , the sacrament of Holy Orders . Cyril Vasiľ was incardinated in the Prešov eparchy . Vasiľ graduated from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome in 1989 with a degree in canon law . On October 15, 1990 he entered the religious community of the Jesuits and in 2001 he made perpetual profession . In 1994 Cyril Vasiľ received his doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Oriental Institute .

In 2002 Vasiľ was elected Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute and its Pro-Rector . Cyril Vasiľ was appointed Rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute in 2007.

On May 7th, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Ptolemais in Libya and ordered him secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches . He was ordained bishop on June 14, 2009 by the former bishop of Križevci, Slavomir Miklovš, in the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of the Prešov Archepark, Ján Babjak SJ, and the Bishop of the Košice Eparchy , Milan Chautur CSsR . Cyril Vasiľ chose the motto Parati semper (“Be always ready”), which comes from the 1st letter of Peter ( 1 Petr 3.15  EU ).

Cyril Vasiľ is consultor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and People on the Move, as well as the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (since 2010). He was also appointed advisor to the Synod of Bishops in 2005. Since January 29, 2011, Cyril Vasiľ has been a member of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migrants and People on the Move. On July 29, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Appeal Commission for Serious Criminal Matters, the decision of which is reserved for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

On January 20, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the Košice Eparchy.
