Czesław Olech (born May 22, 1931 in Pińczów , Poland , † July 1, 2015 ) was a Polish mathematician .

Life

Czesław Olech received his doctorate in 1958 from the Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and habilitated there in 1962. He headed the International Banach Center for Mathematics (1972–1992) and was President of the Scientific Council of the Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1989–2007).

Olech was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as a member of the Polish Mathematical Society , the European Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Society .

Olech's main areas of work were ordinary differential equations and the theory of optimal controls .

In 1992 Czesław Olech was awarded the Stefan Banach Medal , he was an honorary doctor of the University of Vilnius (1989), the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (2006) and the AGH Mining and Metallurgy Academy in Krakow (2009).
