Johannes Dümichen (born October 15, 1833 in Weißholz near Großglogau , Silesia , † February 7, 1894 in Strasbourg ) was a German Egyptologist .

Life

Dümichen studied theology and philology in Berlin and Breslau from 1852 to 1855 and again attended the university in Berlin from 1859 to 1862 to pursue Egyptological studies under Lepsius and Brugsch . In October 1862 Dümichen began his first trip to Egypt and Nubia , which he then extended to a large part of Sudan . He returned from this trip in April 1865. Dümichen made a second trip to Egypt in 1868 together with the photographic department of the expedition returning from Aden , which had been sent to Asia to observe the solar eclipse . He published the results of this expedition in a magnificent work (2 volumes, Berlin 1869–70). A third and fourth tour of the Nile Valley followed in 1869 when the Suez Canal was inaugurated .

After the establishment of the Kaiser Wilhelm University in Strasbourg , Dümichen was appointed professor of Egyptology in 1872. Between 1875 and 1876 he traveled again to Egypt to complete some of the work begun on previous trips in Theban tombs and in the Hathor Temple at Dendera . He had the difficult excavation of the Dendera temple carried out and then copied the hieroglyphic texts that had come to light through this excavation , among which were the inscriptions relating to the building of the temple that he was particularly looking for.

Since 1869 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society .
