Diisononyl phthalate is a mixture of organic chemical compounds belonging to the phthalate group that is mainly used as a plasticizer . It is a colorless liquid with a very faint odor.
It should be noted that the designation DINP or the CAS numbers, due to the production process, means a mixture of esters of phthalic acid (mostly isomers ) with slightly different types of branching of the alcohol groups. CAS number 28553-12-0 means a mixture of substances with more than 50% alkyl-substituted iso-nonyl but also iso-octyl and iso-decyl alcohols. With CAS number 68515-48-0, the alcohol content consists only of the isomers of dimethylheptanol . In terms of their properties (including toxicological), however, both behave in the same way.
Extraction and presentation
Diisononyl phthalate is produced using a titanium catalyst by reacting phthalic anhydride with isononyl alcohol (isononanol, INA).
properties
Diisononyl phthalate is a colorless liquid with a very faint odor. It has a viscosity of 72–82 mPas at 20 ° C.
use
Diisononyl phthalate is used as a plasticizer with low volatility and good cold behavior (95% of it for PVC , the rest in rubber , paints, adhesives , varnishes , sealants and solvents ). It is similar to DEHP in terms of its molecular structure and chain length , but in many cases it has better properties both in its manufacture and in the products.
safety instructions
As a precaution, diisononyl phthalate must not be used in children's toys. According to the EU report, there are no indications of acute hazards from DINP in humans, whereas Greenpeace refers to toxic effects in animal experiments without further citing the source. In March 2018, following a review by the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC), ECHA found that the reproductive toxicity feared by Danish researchers does not exist and that DINP can still be used in industrial products.
