Dagmar of Denmark

Dagmar Louise Elisabeth of Denmark (* May 23, 1890 at Charlottenlund Palace ; † October 11, 1961 at Kongstedlund near Aalborg ) was a Danish princess from the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg family , a branch of the Oldenburg family . Until her wedding she was a member of the Danish royal family. Through marriage she was members of the letter noble family Castenskiold.

Life

Dagmar of Denmark was the eighth and youngest child of the Danish King Frederick VIII (1843-1912) and his wife Louise of Sweden-Norway (1851-1926). It was named after her aunt Dagmar of Denmark , who was Empress of Russia by marriage . Her brother Christian (X.) succeeded his father to the Danish throne, her brother Karl became King of Norway as Haakon VII . Her niece Astrid was Queen of Belgium by marriage . Dagmar grew up in the castles Charlottenlund and Amalienborg .

Dagmar took a different path than many of her noble relatives and married the landowner Jørgen Castenskiold (1893–1978), who came from the lower nobility. The official permission for this was given by King Christian X. in 1922. The Castenskiold family had belonged to the Danish postal nobility since 1745 and had been close to the Danish royal family for generations. Jørgen Castenskiold ran the Kongstedlund estate on the Himmerland peninsula in North Jutland . He later received the title of court hunter master. The wedding took place on November 23, 1922 at Fredensborg Palace.

Dagmar and her husband lived on Kongstedlund in Jutland and had five children, one of whom died in childhood:

  • Carl Frederik Anton Jørgen Castenskiold (November 13, 1923 - April 14, 2006), married to Bente Grevenkop-Castenskiold
  • Christian Ludwig Gustav Fritz Castenskiold (born July 10, 1926), married to Cecily Abbots
  • Jorgen Frederick Aage Erik Helge Castenskiold (March 16, 1928 - May 4, 1964), married to Kirsten Schlichtkrull
  • Dagmar Louise Thyra Sophie Augusta Petra Castenskiold (September 11, 1930 - July 12, 2013), married to Poul Bitsch
  • Christian Frederik Castenskiold (1931–1937)

Their children's marriages gave birth to nine grandchildren. One of her sons became a successful businessman in the United States , and another became an officer in the Danish Navy.

Dagmar of Denmark died on October 11, 1961 on Kongstedlund .
