places

Búðardalur

The place Búðardalur is located on Hvammsfjörður at the northeast end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula . Búðardalur is a small service center for the residents of the area. The Leifsbúð building near the harbor houses a museum about Leifur Eiríksson .

Haukadalur

The valley of Haukadalur is located a few kilometers southeast of Búðardalur. It stretches between the Miðdalur and Laxárdalur valleys . In the valley there is an open-air museum dedicated to Erik the Red ( Eiríksstaðir ).

Ólafsdalur í Dölum

In the inner valley of Gilsfjörður is Ólafsdalur and a farm of the same name, which has since been abandoned.

There in 1880 Torfi Bjarnason (1838–1915) founded the Icelandic Agricultural School. This private school existed until 1907, when the state took over this task. Torfi Bjarnason was very innovative as a farmer and introduced better working methods and machines.

Like all houses over 100 years old, the school building is now a listed building, but serves as a rural school home for the Menntaskólinn við Sund grammar school .

In front of it is a sculpture from 1955 in memory of Torfi Bjarnason and his wife Guðlaug Zakaríasdóttir.

Other historically significant places

Other places of historical importance in the municipality are the manors Hvammur í Dölum and Skarð , which each housed rich landowners and influential politicians and scientists or were their birthplace.
