Damjan Fras (born February 21, 1973 in Ljubljana ) is a former Slovenian ski jumper .

Career

Fras started ski jumping in 1980 . From 1990 he was active in the World Cup and Continental Cup. In his career he won several medals at world championships and Olympic Games.

The then 17-year-old Slovene made his World Cup debut on March 24, 1990 on the Heimschanze in Planica . Just a week later, Fras was able to win bronze in the team for Yugoslavia at the Junior World Championships in Štrbské Pleso . The following year, on March 9, 1991, he won bronze in the individual competition at the Junior World Championships in Reit im Winkl , while Martin Höllwarth won gold for Austria . His first full World Cup season was in the 1991/92 season. Because of his constant performance, he was also allowed to take part in the Olympic Games in Albertville , where he finished 42nd on the large hill. After that it was rather quiet about the young Slovenian.

In the years 1993-1998 Fras jumped mainly in the Continental Cup. From 1994 to 1997 he was ranked 20, 32, 15 and 58 in the overall ranking. In 1998 he finally achieved his breakthrough: With third place in the overall ranking behind Alexander Herr and Falko Krismayr , the then 25-year-old recommended for the World Cup again . As one of the top performers, he managed to reach 5th place with Slovenia at the 1999 World Cup in Ramsau . He also managed to qualify for the finals of the top 30 on both the small and the large hill. In 2000 the first participation in a ski flying world championship followed, in which he was able to occupy the 45th place. In the same season he also reached his first top 10 place (9th in Iron Mountain). In the 2000/2001 season, in addition to a 5th place in jumping in Innsbruck, he achieved 5th and 6th places with the team at the World Championships in Lahti . In the summer of 2001 he finally made it to the top of the world with a 6th place finish in the Summer Grand Prix.

After a strong season, Damjan Fras became one of the most successful Slovenian ski jumpers by winning the Olympic bronze on February 18, 2002 in a team with Primož Peterka , Robert Kranjec and Peter Žonta . In the following season he was able to draw attention to himself again with some top positions. With good placements he qualified for the world championships, where he finally finished 35th on the normal hill. Due to moderate results in the 2003/04 season , he was transferred to the Ski Jumping Continental Cup in January 2004 . In 2006 he made his last appearances in the Continental Cup before ending his active ski jumping career in 2008.

Fras now lives in Ljubljana with his wife and two children .
