Daniel Joseph Brennan, Brennan Baron KCSG , QC (* 19th March 1942 ) is a British politician ( Labor Party ), Life Peer and Barrister .

life and career

Daniel Brennan attended St. Bede's Grammar School in Bradford and graduated with a Bachelor of Law from Manchester University , which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2000 . In 1967 he was admitted to the Gray's Inn as a barrister. In 1985 he became a crown attorney . Brennan has been a Deputy High Court Judge ( Deputy High Court Judge ), the High Court , and a part-time judge ( Recorder ) at the Crown Court since 1982 . He was a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board from 1989 to 1997 and Chairman of the Personal Injuries Bar Association from 1995 to 1997 . He is also a member of the Bar Associations of the Republic of Ireland (since 1990) and Northern Ireland (since 2001). In 1993 he was the presiding judge ( bencher ) at Gray's Inn. In 1999 he was chairman of the General Council of the Bar . In 1998 he was already its vice-president.

In 2000 he was selected by British lawyers and readers of The Lawyer Magazine for "Barrister of the Year" ( Barrister of the Year selected). As a member of the law firm Matrix Chambers , founded in May 2000, he specializes in medical liability law , commercial law , international commercial and business law , international private law , international law and international arbitration proceedings.

Particular focus of his work as a litigator was the subjects of environmental law , product liability and medical liability law , especially in proceedings with class actions , such as the insurance actions in the serious train accident in Paddington in 1999 (Ladbroke Grove Rail Crash), the class action against the birth control pill containing estrogen and progestogen ( Combined oral contraceptive pill ) and, in the past, the lawsuit by residents in connection with the construction of the Canary Wharf office complex , the lawsuits of AIDS- infected hemophilia sufferers against the British government and the representation of the victims in the trial of the demise of the Herald of Free Enterprise .

Brennan is a member of the advisory board of the think tank Global Financial Integrity based in Washington . He was also an independent advisor to the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Defense on compensation for miscarriage of justice and misjudgment.

He is President of the Catholic Union of Great Britain , a lobbying organization for lay Catholics in Great Britain. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pontifical Foundation Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice (CAPP) .

In 1968 he married Pilar Sanchez Moya, who is from Spain . He has four sons with her.

Membership in the House of Lords

On May 2, 2000, he was raised to life peer as Baron Brennan , of Bibury in the County of Gloucestershire .

He belonged to several cross-party groups ( all-party groups ). Since 2004 he has been Chairman of the Spain Group and since 2005 Chairman of the Bar / Legal and Constitutional Affairs Group . Since 2008 he has been vice-chair of the Mexico Group .

In 2005, Brennan spoke in the case of a so-called "designer baby" in the House of Lords appeal proceedings. Brennan said the Lord Justice ( Law Lords ) would have to decide whether the national supervisory authority, the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority , its powers have been exceeded, when they gave permission to a tissue typing to determine the compatibility.

On 19 November 2007 collapsed Brennan in the House of Lords shortly after finishing a speech on the draft law on artificial fertilization and embryology (Human Fertilization and Embryology Bill). In this speech he called for a national bioethics committee to be convened . He received a heart massage from Health Minister Ara Darzi, Baron Darzi of Denham , among others . He then recovered for some time at St Thomas' Hospital in London . Brennan again developed health problems on December 3, 2007 while attending the House of Lords. He was given a pacemaker at St Thomas' Hospital and later thanked peers and staff for helping him.

Further offices and honors

Brennan is a member ( Councilor ) of the International Bar Association (IBA). He received an Honorary Doctorate in Law ( Hon LLD ) from Nottingham Trent University in 1999 and an Honorary Doctorate in Law from the University of Bradford in 2007 . He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) since 2000 . In 2006 he was appointed representative of Great Britain and Ireland to the Order of Constantine to succeed Anthony J. Bailey .
