Daniel Peter "Danny" Williams (born July 13, 1973 in London , England ) is a British heavyweight boxer .

amateur

At the European Championships in 1993 in Bursa , he took third place in the heavyweight division (up to 91 kg). In 1994 he was also third at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria ( Canada ) in the super heavyweight division, where he was defeated by the Nigerian Duncan Dokiwari in the semi-finals . In 1995 he took part in the amateur world championship in Berlin and lost in the first fight against Attilla Levin from Sweden. Williams' record as an amateur boxer was 29 wins out of six losses.

Professional career

Danny Williams began his professional career in 1995. Against his first well-known, but not necessarily high-class opponent Julius Francis (then 19-7), he suffered a point defeat in April 1999 after a poor performance. Two years later they both boxed against each other again and Williams won by knockout in the fourth round.

He was widely praised for his fight against Mark Potter in 2000, as he dislocated his shoulder early on but was still able to knock out his opponent with the other arm. In 2001, in addition to beating Francis, he posted a knockout victory after just 32 seconds of the first round against the undefeated Australian Kali Meehan . This was not rated too highly at the time, as he had never fought outside of Oceania . Later (2004) Meehan boxed against Lamon Brewster for the WBO world title and lost only narrowly and controversially on points.

Then Williams competed against Michael Sprott (defeated Timo Hoffmann ) and won by knockout in round seven. On February 8, 2003, he lost a fight for the European Championship against the Turkish Sinan Şamil Sam in Germany . He had gone into the fight as the favorite but was outclassed and knocked down three times in the fourth round. The fight was finally abandoned in the sixth round. In September of that year he boxed against Michael Sprott again and defeated him again prematurely, this time already in round five. On January 24, 2004, both boxed against each other a third time; this time Sprott was able to prevail on points.

On July 30, 2004 Williams surprisingly defeated Mike Tyson , who had returned to the ring, in the Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky by knockout in the fourth round. His victory, however, was helped by a knee injury Tyson suffered, which the former world champion suffered in the first round. Williams was way behind on points. In the first two laps you saw a very fast Tyson. In round three, Williams was deducted additional points for a blow and look-up. Tyson shook Williams in all four rounds, but the taller and heavier Englishman showed ability to take and did not go down.

With his victory over Tyson Williams recommended himself for a title fight against Vitali Klitschko . On December 11, 2004 Williams lost this voluntary title defense Klitschko by technical knockout in the eighth round. He was knocked to the ground in the first, third, seventh and eighth rounds and could never pose a serious threat to the Ukrainian.

After this defeat he returned to England and boxed after a build-up battle against the undefeated Olympic champion Audley Harrison , whom he was able to send to the ground and just beat on points.

Then there was another duel against his undefeated 39-year-old compatriot Matt Skelton , a former K-1 fighter, which he won on February 2, 2006 just on points. With this fight Williams wanted to recommend himself for a fight for the WBO title or against the WBA title holder Nikolai Valujew . Williams' coach said, however, that his protégé was still a long way from this dream fight.

After a build-up fight against Adnan Serin , which Williams won by knockout in the third round, there was a rematch against Skelton on July 8, 2006 at Millennium Stadium (planned by Williams as a transition station to a world championship fight), as the first fight was tight and entertaining. Williams got into the ring with the highest fighting weight of his career to date (over 130 kg) and lost by unanimous decision.

He lost the rematch against Audley Harrison, although again with his usual fighting weight of 120 kg, already in the third round due to technical knockout. After there was already speculation about his retirement from boxing, he was able to defeat the undefeated Scott in March 2007 Knock out Gammer in the ninth round and win back the British Championship. He weighed in at just 103.5 kg, the lowest weight since his professional debut.

On December 8, 2007 Williams boxed against the Ukrainian Oleh Platov . After Platow dominated the duel at the beginning, Williams determined the fighting from the second round. Platow suffered a laceration from an unintentional head collision. Because of this injury, the fight was stopped in the fourth round and was not scored.

On May 30, 2008 Williams succeeded in the Spanish Barakaldo near Bilbao under controversial conditions a victory against the previously undefeated German Konstantin Airich . For a low blow to Williams', for whose effect Airich was counted, Williams got a deduction of two points. Williams was counted twice while standing in the third round after several heavy impact hits, and Airich was credited with another knockdown in the fourth round when Williams slipped during the lap run. In the fifth round, Williams was deducted another point for looking up. At the end of the round he achieved a precipitation, which was also favored by the opponent's slip. In the sixth round he managed to get another knockdown, whereupon Airich's promoter, the Turk Ahmet Öner , went to the timekeeper's table, rang the bell and thus arbitrarily shortened the round by about half. In the seventh round, Öner then threw in the towel, which meant a victory by technical knockout for Williams.

In July 2008 he defeated John McDermott in the fight for the British heavyweight championship just on points, although three points were deducted from him in the course of the fight (because of low blows and spitting out the mouthguard). He was due to play a rematch against McDermott on November 8, 2008. However, he had to cancel the fight because of a rib injury, whereupon Williams boxed against the Pole Albert Sosnowski , against whom he surprisingly lost through a technical knockout in the eighth round.

On May 2, 2009 there was a rematch against McDermott in the Williams British heavyweight title at stake; he won on points. In October 2009 he took part in the TV heavyweight tournament "Prizefighter" organized by the British television station Sky Sports, but lost his first fight over three rounds on points and had to go down twice in the first round. After he lost the British Championship on May 15, 2010 by a TKO defeat in the second round to the undefeated Dereck Chisora , Danny Williams ended his career, but only temporarily. On March 5, 2011, he came back into the ring and knocked out a build-up opponent in Bielefeld in the second round. A month later, Williams beat László Tóth in the first round knockout. On June 25, 2011 he lost in the seventh round by TKO against Manuel Charr .
