geography

Dansville lies in a landscape formed by glaciers . The north-western part of the town lies in a wide valley that slopes gently to the northwest to the Genesee River , about 20 km away . The rest of the town is characterized by hills and smaller, partly agricultural, partly deeply cut valleys. One of the canyon-like valleys forms the core of Stony Brook State Park, founded in 1928 in the northeast of the town.

There are no villages and census-designated places in the area of the town . The largest contiguous settlements are the hamlets of South Dansville, Beachville and Rogersville.

The neighboring towns are Wayland in the north and east, Fremont in the southeast, Hornellsville in the south, Burns in the east and North Dansville in the north. Burns is in Allegany County , North Dansville in Livingston County, the other towns in Steuben County.

history

From the end of the 18th century, European immigrants or their descendants settled in the then densely forested area north of today's Dansville. Daniel P. Faulkner, from a family who emigrated from Saxony to North America in the 17th century , founded a shop and sawmill in what is now North Dansville in 1795. The name Dansville , which was officially mentioned for the first time in 1796 , is traced back to him.

The village of Dansville was completely in Steuben County when it was founded, which in 1796 founded a town of Dansville as an administrative unit , which initially comprised several 100 m² of space. In 1812 sub-areas in the east and south-east were ceded to the newly founded towns Cohocton and Howard . In 1822, the northwestern part of Steuben County, and thus the northwestern part of the town of Dansville, including the village of Danville, was added to Livingston County, which was founded the previous year. Further pieces of the town of Dansville were spun off in 1848 and 1854 in the newly established Towns Wayland and Fremont.

From the late 19th century to 1947, the main line of the Pittsburg, Shawmut and Northern Railroad ran through the town area. There was a train station in Rogersville.

Interstate 390 Rochester - Avoca ( I 86 ) has run through the northern part of the town since the late 1960s .
