action

One day the devil visits a king at his court, where he has it read that when the sun has set three times and the clock has struck thirteen times, he will come back to take his daughter with him. The king then announced that whoever saved the princess and defeated the devil would have half the kingdom and his daughter as a wife.

Meanwhile, a child named Tom Thumb decides to go on a treasure hunt because he wants to escape his nasty stepmother. As evening falls , it carelessly chases after the will-o'-the-wisps that it considers gold. As a result, it ends up in a bog, where it gets stuck in the mud. Little Tom Thumb calls for help, threatening to sink. Then the mother of the winds appears to him, saves him and instructs him to take care of her sons, the four winds, through which she wants to show him his limits. As expected, Thumbsling is not up to the strength of the four stormy brothers, but for his efforts he receives a flute as a reward , which while it is playing ensures that everyone around has to dance. The next day, while hiking, little Tom Thumb meets a giant who is locking some children in a cave for a later meal. With his magic flute the little one forces the big one to dance until the latter, exhausted, agrees to release the prisoners again. He also forbids the giant to hunt the animals of the forest, whereupon the mother of the forest shows herself to Thumbnail and gives him a magic stick out of gratitude, which does not let go of those who touch it and who want evil to Thumbnail, unless Thumb Thumbs up speaks the words “Stick, let go!”. With a stick and flute in his luggage, the hikers looked for shelter for the night in the hut of a stingy couple. When a little grandfather joins them later, but who is about to be thrown out again, Tom Thumb helps the old man to stay by using the power of a stick to lock the hut owners who are becoming angry in the cellar. As a parting, the old man gives Tom Thumb a ring, which the little one has to turn when he is sad and wishes to be home again, with the stone facing up while he speaks the magic words that are then communicated to him.

When he arrived in a town, Tom Thumb found out that nobody in the whole kingdom could be found who was willing to save the princess from the devil. So he agrees to do this. When the devil goes to the king's court again to pick up his bride, Tom Thumb pulls out his magic flute to play. The horned man, who has to dance continuously, is weakened so much that it is easy for Thumbs to tie the powerless to himself with the magic stick. Close to his opponent, Tom Thumb succeeds in breaking off one of his horns, as a result of which the devil immediately has to go to hell and is not allowed to come back to earth for a thousand years. The princess, who doesn't want to take the child as a husband, then instructs a witch to kill Tom Thumb. He escapes the attempted murder, however, disappointed with the king's daughter, he renounces the wedding with her and with the help of the ring wishes to return to his home village. The king follows him there with the intention of buying the miracle weapons from him. But these had disappeared again, so the monarch only takes the stepmother, who impressed him because of her energetic demeanor, as first lady-in-waiting. Last but not least, little Thumbsling tells the villagers that although the world is beautiful, he likes his homeland better.
