The Black Sheep (Cabaret Prize)
The Niederrheinische Kabarettpreis Das Schwarze Schaf (Black Sheep) is a young talent award for politically and socially critical cabaret, which was launched in 1999 by the cabaret artist Hanns Dieter Hüsch. The aim of the award is to give talented cabaret artists starting their career at the beginning of their career. Every two years from May 1 to September 15, the renowned competition calls on artists from German-language cabaret to participate. Whether in a group or with a solo program - all those who are at the beginning of their cabaret career could only use their own texts and offer politically and socially critical word cabaret.
The preliminary rounds and the final
From the applications received, 12 individual artists or groups will be selected by an admissions jury for the preliminary rounds of the competition. The twelve nominees will be invited to eight public preliminary decisions in the twin cities of Wesel , Krefeld , Emmerich and Moers and will face the vote of the audience, which will decide on the entry into the final. In each of the cities, six candidates appear on two evenings and present a 15-minute excerpt from their current program, each artist appears once in each city. The audience chooses their favorite each evening, and the five or six most popular artists from all preliminary rounds advance to the final. The final round with the award ceremony will take place in the Theater am Marientor in Duisburg . The jury will determine the winner of the competition - the Black Sheep - and the other award winners from the six performances by the finalists.
The winner receives 6,000 euros and a black sheep sculpture by the Rheinberg action artist Rainer Bonk, who also created the otherwise identical blue sheep . In addition, he shows his complete program the day after the award ceremony in the cabaret theater The Column . Places two and three are endowed with 4,000 and 2,000 euros, respectively.
