The Datsun 12 was a further development of the Datsun 11 . The body hardly changed, but there were significant changes to the mechanics. For 1933, the regulations regarding the maximum size of the engine for small cars were changed in Japan. Datsun had successfully submitted an application to the government so that the engine capacity could be increased. Takeuchi-san, one of Datsun's largest investors, was the cousin of the ex- prime minister of Japan and so probably still had good connections in politics . So there was now the new regulation that small cars may have a maximum displacement of 750 cm³. Datsun enlarged its engine to 748 cc, which increased the power to 12 hp.

The changes to the body affected the doors, the upper edges of which were rounded, giving the car a more pleasing shape. At the waistline, a decorative strip that ran all around was painted in a contrasting color. While the engine and 3-speed manual transmission were manufactured by either Yanase Motor or Nihon Jidosha Corporation, the chassis was supplied by Tobata Casting's Osaka Automotive plant, which was renamed Nissan shortly afterwards . In 1934, the Datsun 13 replaced the model after 150 copies had been built.
