The Nissan Maxima is an upper middle class model produced in several generations by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan since 1980 .

Originally, from 1980, the designation Maxima was used as an additional type designation for a six-cylinder version of the Datsun Bluebird 910 with an extended front end. The name later referred to an independent model.

The Nissan Cefiro , which has been built since 1989, is derived from the Maxima . The Maxima A33 is produced under license by Pars Khodro in Iran . In Germany, the Nissan Maxima replaced the Nissan Laurel from spring 1989 .

The first model in the Maxima series was the Datsun Bluebird (PL 910), which was again offered in the USA as the Datsun 810 with an extended wheelbase (2650 instead of 2525 mm). This created space for a larger six-cylinder in-line Otto engine (type L24E, 2.4 liters, 89.5 kW / 122 PS) and six-cylinder diesel in-line engine (type LD28, 2.8 liters, 66.9 kW / 91 PS). The Datsun 810 Maxima was mainly sold in the US and was available as a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon. After Datsun began naming all models for export in 1980, the model series was only called Maxima from 1981 onwards.

In 1984 the model was marketed under the name Nissan-Datsun Maxima to initiate the discontinuation of Datsun.

In contrast, the successor model was marketed as the Nissan Maxima from the start. The Maxima U11 based on the Nissan Bluebird (U11 series) was designed from the outset for a six-cylinder gasoline engine with 115 kW (157 hp), which for the first time powered the front wheels. There was no longer a diesel engine. This model generation, which was mainly intended for the USA, was also offered there from 1985 as a four-door and as a station wagon.

The third generation Maxima was available for the first time in Europe from March 1989, where it replaced the Nissan Laurel . A four-door sedan was offered, initially at a price of 40,995 DM, a station wagon version was no longer available.

A special technical feature of this model was an optional semi-active chassis which could use sonar technology to adapt the shock absorbers to the road conditions. However, this was not available in the European market.

The only first-generation engine in Europe was a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 125 kW / 170 hp (type VG30E); in the SE version offered from 1992 (not available in Europe) a motor was installed (type VE30DE) which delivered 142 kW / 193 PS. This engine was only available in the Maxima because the well-known four-valve VG30DE (installed in the 300ZX) would not have fit under the flat bonnet of the Maxima and differs from it through specially developed cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder and variable camshaft adjustment for the intake side.

From 1995 the model received a new design and new engines. The old engine of the VG series has been replaced by the newly developed VQ series. In the vehicles for Europe, the output of the 3.0-liter V6 model has been increased to 142 kW (193 hp). A 2.0 liter V6 engine with 103 kW (140 hp) was newly introduced. A 2.5-liter V6 was also on offer in other countries.

The A32 was no longer an independent model, but identical to the Nissan Cefiro which was sold in Asia. European models were given the suffix QX. On the North American market, the Maxima was sold with a slightly modified body, but the international version was also available as the Infiniti I30. From a technical point of view, the weak points of the predecessor model were specifically remedied (such as the cracked exhaust manifolds and the defective automatic transmissions, due to the higher speeds common in Europe).

For the A32 model series, the independent rear multi-link axle of the J30 was replaced by a simple rigid axle (referred to as a compact link axle by Nissan and installed in a similar form in the Primera P11 and in the Almera), which tends to suddenly oversteer in the limit area, which is a clear step backwards compared to the previous model and was one of the few serious weaknesses of the Maxima. Likewise, the semi-active "Super Sonic Suspension" system was no longer available.

The A33 was a revised version of the A32. The wheelbase and body grew in length and the design was modernized; the European and North American versions had differently designed front sections. The vehicle was delivered without ESP, although this would have been necessary precisely because of the rear axle and the long rear section.

In Europe, two V6 engines with a displacement of 2.0 and 3.0 liters (with 103 kW / 140 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS respectively) were offered, in other countries the well-known 2.5-liter V6. In North America, only the 3.0-liter V6 was offered, which was replaced by a 3.5-liter V6 in 2002 (190 kW / 259 hp). Top speeds of over 230 km / h were possible with a manual transmission, and up to 210 km / h with an automatic transmission.

The top equipment in Germany included an automatic transmission with overdrive and sports gearshift, leather upholstery, front seat heating , navigation system, xenon light and auxiliary heating as standard .
