David Burns (actor)
David Burns (born June 22, 1902 in Chinatown , Manhattan , New York City , † March 12, 1971 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American actor and singer .
Life
Burns was born in Chinatown, New York, to Harry and Dora Burns. He made his Broadway debut in 1921 in Polly Preferred . Together with this production he went to London in 1924. Over the course of his 50-year career, he has appeared in many musicals and comedies. He won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in a musical for his appearances in the successful musicals The Music Man (1958) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1963) .
In his film debut De Luxe Annie , which also remained his only silent film , Burns starred in 1918 at the side of Norma Talmadge . In the 1930s he played some American, but mainly British films mostly comedic supporting roles. He established himself in Hollywood from the 1950s through supporting roles in films such as Die Lachbombe at the side of Danny Kaye , Mainly cheerful with Gene Kelly and Dan Dailey and Let's do it in love with Marilyn Monroe and Yves Montand . Burns has also been featured in guest roles on American television since the 1950s, but had a recurring supporting role alongside Peter Falk in the series The Trials of O'Brien as the charming con artist "The Great McGonigle" - the character leaned on the eponymous Character from WC Fields in the movie The Good Old Days . After he received an initial nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for this role , he won it in the year of his death for his appearance as Mr. Solomon in a television adaptation of Arthur Miller's play The Prize .
The 68-year-old Burns suffered a fatal heart attack on stage on March 12, 1971 in Philadelphia . His collapse is said to have been thought of by his stage colleagues as a gag, as he fit into one of the "great comedy actors of Broadway".
