action

After Brody's mother is admitted to a mental hospital, the teenager, whose father has long since died, has to move to his uncle Albert in Greypoint. He runs a Christian-Orthodox household with his wife Mary and his son David, which leads to tension with the heavy metal fan Brodie from the start. In his new school, Brodie is bullied in particular by his cousin David and his clique; He finds friends in the two role-playing enthusiasts Dion and Giles. In the local record store he meets the charismatic Zakk, who is also a metal fan. Zakk, Brodie, Dion and Giles form the metal band Deathgasm, which rehearses in Brodie's uncle's garage.

At school there is a rapprochement between Brodie and the school beauty Medina, but Brodie's shyness stands in the way of deepening this relationship.

During a break-in into a supposedly empty house, Zakk and Brodie encounter the reclusive musician Rikki Daggers, whom they admire and convince of their harmlessness. When Daggers hears another stranger in his house, Daggers hands Brodie and Zakk a record and orders them to flee immediately. A little later Daggers is arrested and executed by another burglar, a contract killer. The murderer turns out to be a member of a cult who was looking for a medieval set of sheet music that he suspected was in the possession of Daggers and that is said to contain occult powers. At home, Brodie discovers the sheet music in the record cover.

Brodie's cousin David, who had seen the rapprochement between Brody and Medina, fits him behind the school and brutally beats him up with an assistant to emphasize his claims to possession of her. Meanwhile, Zakk torpedoes the beginning romance between Brodie and Medina with a clever maneuver and meets with her.

Desperate, Brodie calls the band together and they play the old notes, not realizing that this is an ancient ritual of awakening that calls the demon The Blind One to earth. The residents of the small town are gradually turning into bloodthirsty zombies, and members of the aforementioned cult visit Greypoint to try The Blind One. Brodie, Zakk, Medina, Dion and Giles have to fend off attacks from the zombies several times , and Brodie and Zakk quarrel over its approach to Medina, whereupon Zakk decides to leave the city. The remaining four are captured by members of the cult and taken to the home of Rikki Daggers; there they are to be sacrificed as part of a revival ritual The Blind One. However, the remorseful Zakk returns and is able to free the four. As a result, Dion and Giles die. The remaining three succeed in destroying the awakened demon and killing the remaining cult members, with Zakk being killed.

History of origin

Howden, employed full time at Weta Digital and jointly responsible for the computer special effects in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy , used his own experience in the script; He spent his youth as a metal fan and outsider in a small town in New Zealand. The film was financed in part by the prize money of the New Zealand Make My Horror Movie competition, which is organized by the New Zealand Film Commission and the New Zealand Herald and is endowed with 200,000 NZD (around 120,000 euros in 2015) and the director Howden 2014 won. The film premiered on March 14, 2015 at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, USA . The German premiere was on August 10, 2015 as part of the Fantasy Film Festival .

In 2016, director Howden announced a sequel entitled Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon based on the positive response to the film .

Film music

The film music consists of contributions from metal bands of various genres. Author and director Howden wanted a mix of different styles such as Black Metal , Death Metal , Thrash Metal and Stoner Metal and personally selected the groups represented. In addition to underground bands such as Axeslasher (USA), Beastwars (New Zealand) and Elm Street (Australia), well-known groups such as Nunslaughter , Emperor and Skull Fist can be heard . The title song Deathgasm comes from the New Zealanders Bulletbelt, Jason Lei Howden can be heard as a guest singer. The soundtrack was released as a double LP in colored vinyl by Death Waltz Recordings at the end of October 2016 .

criticism

Dennis Harvey praised the humor of the film in the Variety , described the design and equipment of the film as above average for the budget and called it "lovably stupid", but criticized the script as not surprising. Richard Whittaker also criticized the predictable script for the Austin Chronicle, but noted that director Howden provided enough "diaphragmatic laughs" through humor and special effects. Matt Donato noted for the film portal We Got This Covered that deathgasm was the "wet dream of a metal fan". But he also analyzed that the film empathizes with outsiders and visualizes their emotional world. Deathgasm was voted the audience favorite in the Spotlights section at the HARD: LINE Festival 2015 .
