Octalus - The death from the depth ( Deep Rising ) is an American horror film from Stephen Sommers from the year 1998 . The film opened in German cinemas on May 28, 1998.
action
John Finnegan and the crew of his small ship are forced to help out with an insurance fraud. They drive a group of criminals to a cruise ship that is about to be sunk. But when they come aboard the ship, everything is very different than expected. You find numerous traces of blood, the passengers and the crew have disappeared. Few people are still alive, including ship owner Simon Canton, Captain Atherton, and trick thief Trillian St. James.
It turns out that mutant giant worms of the extinct species Ottoia prolifica invaded the ship and killed the passengers and crew. The group of survivors fights the worms, but is further decimated in the process. Finally, Canton tries to flee with Finnegan's small ship, which, however, is no longer controllable. It goes in circles and rams the cruise ship. The impact results in an explosion that kills the giant worm.
Finnegan and Trillian flee on a personal watercraft and are stranded on a desert island. A little later, Finnegan's ship mechanic Joey comes out of the sea, who (according to his story) escaped death with luck. At that moment, noises indicate that the island is inhabited by a monster.
Reviews
James Berardinelli scoffed at ReelViews that the film showed an "originality" as if the script had been written by a computer. He accused the film of "idiotic monotony" ("idiotic monotony").
The lexicon of international films wrote: “Ready-made adventure thriller about the threat posed by a monster superior to mankind. Superficial tension is simply derived from an increasingly monotonous sequence of shock and disgust effects, whereby the film never knows how to build up inner tension and suggestive power. "
