Deer Tick (in German: deer tick ) is an American indie - folk band from Providence , Rhode Iceland to the singer-songwriter John McCauley (* 14. June 1986 ), which was created in December 2004, first as a solo project McCauley. The music of his band contains folk, Americana and blues elements and is characterized by McCauley's rough singing voice.
history
After participating in various school bands and first solo appearances during his high school years in Providence, Rhode Island, the later founder of Deer Tick , John McCauley III, went on an almost one-year trip through the USA after graduating from school in 2004, during which he appeared regularly as a singer, only accompanied by his own guitar playing. When he was still at school, he had written his own songs, which, according to McCauley, had been inspired by his experiences as a “highly depressed teenager”. McCauley mentions Hank Williams and Ritchie Valens as early musical influences , but also Roy Orbison , Townes Van Zandt and Tom Petty .
After his return to Providence, McCauley recorded various demos and records on his own in his apartment or in his parents' living room over the next two years, with various accompanying musicians; including a CD with bassist Nat Baldwin of the jazz band Lavender , which was released on the local label Tabel Tapes .
The debut album War Elephant , on the recording of which McCauley played all the instruments himself on some of the songs and most of which he had already written at the age of 17, was first released in September 2007 on the indie label FEOW! Records by the songwriter Jana Hunter , which shortly afterwards, in January 2008, had to file for bankruptcy. The album initially received good reviews, but since the label's problems meant that soon no CDs could be re-pressed, the unfortunate situation arose for the band that they were not on the tour that was supposed to promote their album Were able to offer the album to the fans. Finally, Deer Tick came in the course of 2008 under the label Partisan Records , the War Elephant on November 11, 2008 re-released.
The second album Born on Flag Day from June 2009 was recorded with a new line-up - consisting of bassist Christopher Ryan, drummer Dennis Ryan and guitarist Andrew Tobiassen - and placed in the American Billboard charts at number 17 in the Top Heatseekers and category # 44 on Top Independent Albums . After the album was recorded, guitarist Ian O'Neil of the New Jersey band Titus Andronicus joined the band and replaced Andrew Tobiassen.
The band also attracted additional attention during this time with their appearance on the first edition of Brian Williams ' Internet music show BriTunes for NBC .
The January 2010 EP More Fuel for the Fire had more Alternative Country references than the earlier CDs. In June 2010 the third album The Black Dirt Sessions was released; in August the band performed at the Lollapalooza Festival 2010. After that it got a little quieter around the band. In 2012 she released the Extended Play Tim .
On July 30, 2013 the band released The Dream's in the Ditch as a harbinger of a new album. The song was a holdover from a songwriting session for the side project Dirt Naps . On September 24, 2013, the band finally released their fifth album Negativity . Produced by Steve Berlin, it had a much smoother sound than its predecessor. John McCauley had a duet with Vanessa Carlton in In Our Time .
In December 2013, John married McCauley Carlton. The wedding was headed by Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks .
The band toured with Jenny Lewis and Neko Case and have built a reputation as a wild live band that often interacts with audiences during their concerts. In August 2009 in New York, McCauley got engaged to Nikki Darlin, ukulele player for Those Darlins, during a concert by his band on stage . In 2009 the band performed at the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the South by Southwest Festival, among others, and completed their first European tour with 15 concerts, among others. a. in Spain, the Netherlands and the UK.
