Deez Nuts (internet phenomenon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deez Nuts is the name of a fictional candidate for the Presidency of the United States . In polls conducted to determine which candidate has the best chance of winning the election, Deez Nuts received almost nine percent of the vote in several states in the United States, including Iowa , Minnesota and North Carolina . It found that Deez Nuts had the best poll ratings for a non-party presidential candidate since Ross Perot in 1996.

This response ensured that the candidate attracted national attention. At first it was unclear who was hiding behind the fictional candidate. Research by the music magazine Rolling Stone led to 15-year-old Brady Olson from Wallingford in the US state of Iowa. Olson, who had chosen the name of the meme of the same name for his candidacy, said in an interview with the music magazine that he wanted to run "to break the existing two-party system" and to his "frustration with Hillary Clinton , Donald Trump and Jeb Bush ”. According to Olson, his younger brother suggested that he should use the name "Deez Nuts" for his candidacy. On his Facebook presence, Olson said he was supported by the Australian hardcore band of the same name .

In addition to the Huffington Post , CBS News , the New York Daily News , the British Guardian , the Washington Times , USA Today , Newsweek and the International Business Times also reported on Olson's candidacy. In the meantime, German-language media, including 20 Minuten , Vice and N24, have reported about Deez Nuts' candidacy.

Memes

The internet phenomenon "Deez Nuts" goes back to a video published in 2015 by Instagram user WelvenDaGreat in which he told a friend a joke on the phone. This video was viewed almost 60,000 times in the first month. Four days after uploading it to the Instagram platform, Javalicius published an extended version of the video on YouTube , which was viewed almost half a million times within the first three weeks after the upload. In the meantime there are other videos in which the Deez-Nuts-Meme is used. The name of the meme goes back to the 1992 song Deeez Nuuutz by Dr. Dre back from the album The Chronic , in the intro of which guest musician Warren G tells a "deez nuts" joke.

election program

With regard to economic policy , Deez Nuts believes that Congress should not spend more than you get in taxes. In order to reduce the national debt, he advocates halving the salaries of all politicians in Congress, in the cabinet and also the income of the president until the state is largely debt-free. After that, salaries would be gradually increased again. Nuts is also in favor of lowering corporate taxes so that companies can keep jobs in the United States. He hopes that the state will become more independent of imported goods in the future. In the area of environmental policy , Nuts plans to reduce corporate tax for companies that use renewable energies and green technologies, which means that he will help municipalities install wind turbines, hydroelectric dams and solar systems. Nuts has not commented on nuclear energy. Deez Nuts advocates a deportation policy for illegal immigrants who are of legal age. He has not yet given an opinion on underage immigrants or illegally immigrated families with children. He is a proponent of same-sex marriage, for the legalization of abortion, and believes that everyone should live the way they want. He does not see the United States as a Christian state.

In addition, Nuts believes that residents of the island state of American Samoa automatically receive American citizenship and thus easy right to vote, while the territories of Puerto Rico , the US Virgin Islands , Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands receive one or two more votes, respectively Total number of votes increased by ten votes to a total of 548 votes. He also advocates giving the city of Washington, DC and the five territories a permanent seat in the House of Representatives.

Since his candidacy on July 29, 2015, Deez Nuts has sought to be nominated for various parties, including the Modern Whig Party and the Rent Is Too Damn High Party . His campaign page also lists the American Populist Party , the Citizens Party , the Independence Party , the Justice Party , the Marijuana Party , the Moderate Party and the Reform Party as possible parties for nomination. On August 21, 2015, Jimmy McMillan Nuts offered a nomination for the Rent Is Too Damn High Party. At the same time, he announced his support for Deez Nuts.

In a survey on his Facebook presence, Nuts asked who he should ask for his candidacy as a partner. The choice fell on Limberbutt McCubbins , a domestic cat that was also nominated as a joke candidate. The operators of McCubbins' Facebook account responded to his request that he was honored, but that McCubbins / Nuts would reject a joint candidacy.

reaction

Due to the fact that presidential candidates must have reached the age of 35, the Deez Nuts candidacy will not be considered. However, the political activist and founder of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party , Jimmy McMillan , said that Olson's action could spur young people to increase their interest in voting in the future.

"Deez Nuts has the power to inspire young people and turn this country around. Deez Nuts can get the young people excited! Deez Nuts would be great because the children need to get involved. They need to tell these other candidates, these old men who are taking the country down the hell hole, that something needs to change. The youths are hurting - they can't get jobs, they can't buy a home - and these old people are doing nothing for them. Deez Nuts has woke me up! If a 15-year-old can see what is wrong with this country, then why can't a 51 year old? "
